Hydatid cyst may be found in almost any part of the body, but most often in the liver and the lungs. Other organs affected occasionally include the brain, muscle, kidney, heart, pancreas, adrenal, and thyroid gland. Hydatidosis located in the thyroid is an infrequent finding, even in endemic regions. This report documents a rare case with a cystic nodule in the thyroid detected by ultrasonography. The patient was a 30-year-old woman with an euthyroid multinodular goitre. Ultrasonography revealed a cystic nodule, and the ultrasonic appearance of the cyst liquid showed multiple echoes, suggesting that the nodule could be a hydatid cyst. The histopathologic examinations confirmed this to be a primary hydatid cyst of thyroid. During the differential diagnosis of the cystic thyroid lesions, hydatid disease of the thyroid gland should be considered in endemic areas. Chemotherapy is necessary to avoid recurrence. Introduction: Primary Hydatid cyst of pancreas is a rare entity even in endemic countries. These cases usually present with non specific symptoms such as pain abdomen, vomiting or feeling of vague lump in abdomen. Presentation of Case: A 55 year old lady presented to GI surgery department, GB Pant institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER), India with complaints of lump in abdomen and pain abdomen which was evaluated with imaging studies (Computed tomography scan Abdomen and Magnetic resonance imaging Abdomen). Initially considered as cystic lesion pancreas, Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) confirmed diagnosis of Hydatid cyst and patient underwent open deroofing and drainage of cyst with uneventful post operative period.

AbstractA 34-year-old female patient was presented to the general surgery clinic of the hospital complaining of a growing tangible swelling in her neck. In physical examination, the patient had two palpable soft nodules in the left lobe of the thyroid which hadn’t invaded the surrounding tissues. The function of thyroid gland was normal and fine needle aspiration (FNA) result reported it benign. The patient went through a left lobectomy and isthmectomy. The histopathology report concluded a nodular hyperplasia and a Hydatid cyst. After surgery, the patient was examined searching for any other organs cyst, but there were no cystic lesion in the cranial, thoracic and abdominal cavities. Accordingly, the case was a primary thyroid hydatid cyst, which is rare, even in endemic regions like Iran.

Hydatid cyst is ecchinococcal disease caused by tapeworm echinococcus, most commonly by metacestode stage of echinococcus granulosus. Liver is the most common organ to be aff ected followed by lungs and spleen. Primary hydatid cyst in the pelvis is rare. We report a case of primary isolated pelvic hydatid cyst diagnosed incidentally during laparotomy performed for adnexal mass. Key words: adnexae, albendazole, echinococcus, hydatid cyst, laparotomy
