Regular aerial treatment of 14000 km of watercourses has achieved and maintained, over an area of 700000 km 2 of West African savannah, a very high degree of control of the larvae of Simulium damnosum sensu stricto and S. sibanum , the vectors of onchocerciasis in this area. However, particular and relatively restricted parts of this area, mainly in northern Ivory Coast and neighbouring parts of Upper Volta, experience regular and prolonged reinvasions by parous female vectors, which have already taken bloodmeals (and many of them carrying the parasites) and arrive from unknown sources probably hundreds of kilometres away, from directions probably between southwest and north. This reinvasion, now experienced in three successive years, represents the outstanding scientific, epidemiological and logistic problem still facing the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme. An outline is presented of the multidisciplinary investigations being undertaken to find a solution.

Identification of the sibling species of the blackfly, S. damnosum complex using their polytene chromosomal banding patterns in Oji river system was carried out with the aim of accurately identifying the particular sibling species of S. damnosum complex involved in the transmission of onchocerciasis in Oji-river LGA and environ. Simulium damnosum complex larvae were collected monthly in forty eight (48) breeding sites in four sampling units for three years in the Oji river system in wet and dry seasons. Collected larvae were preserved in cold Carnoy’s solution prior to processing. Salivary gland chromosomes were extracted, processed and analyzed microscopically for polytene chromosomal banding patterns. Three sibling species of Simulium damnosum complex that breed in the Oji river system were identified in varying degrees. They included S. squamosum, S. yahense and S. damnosum sensu stricto (s.s.). Variation in the occurrence of the sibling species was statistically significant. Dry and wet season catches for all the sibling species in the sampling units were found to differ statistically. The identified sibling species of S. damnosum complex are known to be vectors of Onchocerca volvulus, the causative agent of onchocerciasis, a disease highly prevalent in Oji-river LGA and environ.

AbstractA significant relationship between pteridine content of the head, fly age and fly size, which was independent of temperature, was found for adult females of Simulium sirbanum Vajime & Dunbar using flies maintained at different constant temperatures after eclosion. Similar relationships for flies maintained at varying temperatures within the species' natural ranges were obtained in experiments with the Beffa form of S. soubrense Vajime & Dunbar (sensu Post, 1986), S. sanctipauli Vajime & Dunbar (= S. soubrense sensu Post, 1986), S. squamosum (Enderlein), S. yahense Vajime & Dunbar and S. damnosum sensu stricto. Common slopes for the effects of age and size could be fitted to all these species. Relations between pteridine concentration in the head, fly size and age, with the common slopes but with species-specific intercepts, were used to estimate the age structure of wild-caught populations of the Beffa form of S. soubrense, S. squamosum and S. yahense. A dry season sample of S. squamosum was estimated to be older than a wet season sample. The mean age of the S. soubrense population, sampled one week after its presumptive breeding sites were treated with larvicides, was estimated to be 13.5 days. The maximum was 30.9 days and a frequency distribution of the estimates had distinct peaks, at three day intervals between 8 and 21 days. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to fly longevity and gonotrophic cycle lengths.
