Open Access: Overlap in external technology search locations and the breadth of IPR assets: lessons from the Security Software Industry

The open source and open access movements, both philosophical concepts as well as models of information flow, have been instrumental in the development of the business of free. This chapter defines both models and traces their history. Open source shaped the growth of the Web and changed consumer expectations, and as a result, companies have developed various ways to generate revenue even while giving their products away. The open access movement grew in tandem with electronic publishing and has led to both the user expectation of free content and a question of how publications can survive that expectation. Open source and open access will continue to influence the software industry, which is developing a “freemium” model for generating revenue from free products. The publishing industry will need to evolve radically, and open source and open access may also drive the integration of “open government” principles into our political systems.

This paper seeks to explore the drivers of survival in environments characterized by high rates of entry and exit, fragmented market shares, rapid pace of product innovation and proliferation of young ventures. The paper aims to underscore the role played by post-entry product strategies, along with their interaction, after carefully controlling for `at entry' factors and demographic conditions. Based on a population of 270 firms that entered the US security software industry between 1989 and 1998, we find evidence that surviving entities are those that are more aggressive in the adoption of versioning and portfolio broadening strategies. In particular, focusing on any one of these two strategies leads to a higher probability of survival as opposed to adopting a mixed strategy.

By bridging literature on resource partitioning and markets for technology, this article proposes that companies that pursue a broad (focused) product strategy buy more (less) technology in the market but sign fewer (more) deals as technology suppliers. Furthermore, an alignment between product and technology market strategies increases firms’ survival chances: Companies that pursue a broad (focused) product strategy are more likely to prosper when they buy (sell) technology in the market. To test these contentions, the authors consider a population of 736 firms that entered the security software industry between 1989 and 2002.

Zusammenfassung. Psychische Störungen können über die ganze Lebensspanne auftreten. Strukturierte klinische Interviews sind zentrale Hilfsmittel für ihre rasche, zuverlässige und umfassende Diagnostik. Im deutschsprachigen Raum stehen mit den Verfahren der DIPS-Familie Interviews zur Diagnostik psychischer Störungen über die gesamte Lebensspanne zur Verfügung, die seit den 90er Jahren regelmäßig aktualisiert wurden. Ihre Reliabilität, Validität und Akzeptanz wurde wiederholt in großen Stichproben aus ambulanten, stationären und Forschungssettings überprüft. Die Einführung des DSM-5 erforderte eine umfassende Überarbeitung der DIPS-Interviews, deren wesentliche Merkmale dargestellt werden. Um die breitere Verwendung von strukturierten klinischen Interviews zu fördern, werden die Verfahren der DIPS-Familie neu als „Open Access-Dokumente“ zur Verfügung gestellt. Abschließend werden weitere Entwicklungen zu Training, Dissemination und Computerisierung im Ausblick angesprochen.
