Spatial modelling of flood-susceptible areas based on a hybrid multi-criteria model and Geographic Information System: a case study applied to the Bengalas River basin A B S T R A C TThe identification of areas susceptible to flooding is essential for disaster management and public policy making. The objective of this work is the presentation of a method for the identification of areas susceptible to floods through the integration of geographic information from Remote Sensing techniques, Geographic Information System (GIS) tools, Fuzzy logic and the application of Multicriteria Analysis Methods (MAM) Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). In order to achieve the objective, a case study was proposed, located in the Bengalas River Basin, in the municipalities of Nova Friburgo and Bom Jardim (Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro). Multicriteria spatial modeling was performed by selecting a data set composed of geomorphological, hydrological and land use information. As a result, a flood susceptibility map was obtained for the region. The coherence of the generated model was verified from the flood history of the Bengalas River basin. The methodology was efficient and adequate for the determination of areas susceptible to floods, successfully predicting the spatial distribution of areas at risk of flooding. Keywords: flood susceptibility. Depending on the technical, institutional, economic and social limits of developing countries, as well as the population density in cities, nowadays, the volume of urban waste has increased considerably, and the management of this waste contributes to climate change, and air pollution, it directly affects many ecosystems and many species. Waste management faces serious problems such as irregular collection, informal sweeping activities, uncontrolled dumping and proliferation of illegal dumping. The latter constitute a real and permanent threat to the quality of life, this exponential increase in the urban population and the resulting accelerated phenomenon of urbanization have highlighted the need to develop sustainable and efficient waste management systems. Stakeholders are therefore required to consider alternative and available means of disposal, in particular by minimizing the damage caused to the ecosystem and to the human population, among these means of disposal, controlled landfills, considered as the last option in the waste hierarchy. In this study, attempts were made to locate a new landfill in Oum Azza using the AHP multi-criteria decision-making method to assess the different criteria considered during the prospecting and combining them with the geographic information system to acquire the results in the form of maps displayed on the optimal sites to house a new controlled landfill and minimize its terrible impact on the environment.

Abstract Background: Erer is one of the districts in Ethiopia where the first malaria transmission season occurs. Although the focus on malaria research has increasingly gained ground, little emphasis has been given to develop quantitative methods for assessing malaria hazard and risk in a temporal and spatial perspective. Objective: To characterize and examine the temporal and spatial malaria trend. The research also aims at producing a predictive model of malaria hazard and risk in Erer district. Methods: In this study a cross sectional research design was used. It was carried out through the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data about the nature of malaria and household’s response towards it. A multi-stage sampling method was used and 136 sample size was determined from the sampling frame of 6203 households. Simple descriptive analysis technique was used to determine the malaria trend of the district. Integration of Geographic information system and analytic hierarchy process was used to determine the weight of each factor pair wise comparison and weighted linear combination was used to aggregate and produce the hazard and malaria risk maps. Results: Results have shown that 19.92%, 27.96%, 32.35%, 18.93% and 0.82% of the district was very high, high, moderate, low and very low malaria risk areas respectively. The malaria trend of the area was found to be variable across time with 2014 the peak year while the minimum case observed was in 2016. Conclusion: It is possible to conclude that risk maps are important for estimating the scale of the risk, and enable detection of high risk areas, thus facilitating decision making and policy formulation for enhanced malaria control interventions. Key words: Analytic Hierarchy Process; Malaria risk; Malaria trend; Weighted overlay
