This study was conducted for natural radioactivity of some fish feed samples in Nigeria, using gross alpha and beta method with protean instrument corporate (PIC) MPC 2000DP detector. The range of the gross alpha concentration for the sample, for the Uranium series was 0.0246 ± 0.0051 Bq/g to 0.0028 ± 0.0055 Bq/g, similarly for gross beta concentration ranges from 0.0651 ± 0.0104 Bq/g to 0.0621 ± 0.0100 Bq/g for the samples. The annual effective doses of the activities for the three sample A, B, and C which were 18.56 μSvy-1, 10.91 μSvy-1 and 17.20 μSvy-1 respectively. The results appeared to be below the standard annual effective dose of 70 μSvy-1 for humans as recommended by (UNSCEAR, 1977 and 1982). This research shows that consumers of fish have no risk of radioactivity ingestion in to the food chain, even though no amount of radiation is assumed to be totally safe because radiation is known to trigger or induce cancer

Abstract In the present paper the different ways of assessing the annual effective dose due to ingestion of radionuclides by drinking water consumption were examined and exemplified. On a set of 10 samples the gross alpha activity, the gross beta activity, the concentration of 210Po, 210Pb, 238U, 232Th and, 226Ra were measured. The highest annual effective dose values assessed by relying on the investigated sample set were found by using the rationale according to which all the gross alpha and beta activity is due to the alpha and beta radionuclide, with the highest effective dose coefficient, namely 210Po and 210Pb/228Ra, respectively.

Abstract The current study was conducted to measure the activity concentration of the gross alpha and beta in 87 groundwater samples collected from the productive aquifers that constitute a major source of groundwater to evaluate the annual effective dose and the corresponding health impact on the population and to investigate the quality of groundwater in Jordan. The mean activity concentration of gross alpha and beta in groundwater ranges from 0.26 ± 0.03 to 3.58 ± 0.55 Bq L−1 and from 0.51 ± 0.07 to 3.43 ± 0.46 Bq L−1, respectively. A very strong relationship was found between gross alpha and beta activity concentrations. The annual effective dose for alpha and beta was found in the range of 0.32–2.40 mSv with a mean value of 0.89 mSv, which is nine times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended limit and one and half times higher than the national regulation limit. The mean lifetime risk was found to be 45.47 × 10−4 higher than the Jordanian estimated upper-bound lifetime risk of 25 × 10−4. The data obtained in the study would be the baseline for further epidemiological studies on health effects related to the exposure to natural radioactivity in Jordan.

Abstract It is inevitable that we are exposed to radiation daily from various sources and products that we consume on daily basis. The use of toothpaste for oral hygiene is one of the most common daily practices by humans and yet very little data are available regarding its radiation content. In this work, we investigated the concentrations of gamma emitting radionuclides in toothpaste samples consumed in Jordan. 40K and 226Ra were detected in almost one-third of the samples, whereas 228Ra was detected in nearly half of them. The corresponding activity concentrations in the detected samples were in the ranges of 68.7–154.2, 4.6–14.1 and 1.3–10.0 Bq/kg, respectively. Dose assessment of accidental ingestion of toothpaste for children and adults was made, and its contribution to the annual effective dose was found to be very minimal with maximum doses of ~2.9 and 1.3 μSv for children and adults, respectively.

In this research the specific activity of natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were determined by sodium iodide enhanced by thallium NaI(TI) detector and assessed the annual effective dose in Dielac 1 and 2 and Nactalia 1 and 2 for children of less than 1 year which are available in Baghdad markets. The specific activity of 40K has the greater value in all the types which is in the range of allowed levels globally that suggested by UNSCEAR. The mean value of annual effective doses were 2.92, 4.005 and 1.6325 mSv/y for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K respectively.

Abstract As a screening procedure, gross alpha and gross beta activity have been developed to determine whether further analysis of water samples related to specific radionuclide is necessary. In China, the determination of gross alpha and gross beta in drinking water was generally based on the HJ standard method: HJ 898-2017, water quality — determination of gross alpha activity — thick source method, and HJ 899-2017, water quality — determination of gross beta activity — thick source method. In this study, 15 water samples from Bahe river in Chan Ba region of Xi’an in China, were pretreated and analyzed by BH1216-III low background alpha and beta scintillation counter. The water samples were collected nearby residential area, wetland park, water conservation district and urban sewage treatment plant as well as other important locations which probably influence on the radioactivity level. The values of the activity concentrations of the gross alpha and beta measured in the water samples ranged from less than LD to 0.183Bq/L with a mean of 0.077Bq/L and 0.073–0.151Bq/L with a mean 0.102Bq/L respectively. All values of samples were lower than the limit level of 0.500Bq/L for gross alpha and 1.000Bq/L for gross beta, indicating that the radioactivity level in Bahe water between Chan Ba region of Xi’an is basically within the normal environmental background.
