Abstract. Forest disturbances contribute to the decrease in carbon sequestration potential and ecosystem services in a watershed. One of the important watersheds that is affected by land use changes and disturbances is the Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed. The ability of the watershed to provide ecosystem services is affected by the existing land use and land cover (LULC) and its future trends. Therefore, this study aims to assess the changes in the LULC, forest disturbances, and potential carbon stock in the watershed using satellite images. The LULC types and indices used in detecting forest disturbances were classified and generated from the Landsat 8 satellite images covering two different years. The potential carbon storage in the watershed was estimated using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) Carbon model. The information generated can be used in the conduct of valuation studies and land use planning in the watershed.

The accurate land use land cover (LULC) classifications from satellite imagery are prominent for land use planning, climatic change detection and eco-environment monitoring. This paper investigates the accuracy and reliability of Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier for classifying multi-spectral image of Hyderabad and its surroundings area and also compare its performance with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier. In this paper, a hybrid technique which we refer to as Fuzzy Incorporated Hierarchical clustering has been proposed for clustering the multispectral satellite images into LULC sectors. The experimental results show that overall accuracies of LULC classification of the Hyderabad and its surroundings area are approximately 93.159% for SVM and 89.925% for ANN. The corresponding kappa coefficient values are 0.893 and 0.843. The classified results show that the SVM yields a very promising performance than the ANN in LULC classification of high resolution Landsat-8 satellite images.

AbstractThis paper is a communication from the corresponding symposium at the Global Land Project Open Science Meeting, Berlin, March 2014. We explored the assumption that the ecosystem services-(ES) concept has the potential to support communication and collaboration between actors in land use planning. If true, the concept could facilitate collaborative planning processes. We analyse how to evolve a planning context in which governance networks at the local landscape level gain importance in decision making, while the central government delegates power. From case studies presented during the symposium we learned that the ES-concept has been explored for application in local land use planning around the world. However, whether ES are recognized as a useful planning concept depends on individual actor preferences and cultural and contextual factors, such as the actual nature-human relationship and gender differences. Also, successful application requires the support of novel assessment, design and visualization tools, which are designed to foster collaboration and social learning. The potential of the concept to contribute to collaborative relationships needs further investigation.
