Abstract An exogenic origin is suggested for the manganese deposit of Las Cabesses, Ariege, France, as well as for others in the Pyrenees, because of the localization of mineralization in the upper Devonian or at the Devonian- Dinantian (Carboniferous) boundary. Other proofs of the exogenic origin consist of the evidence that deposition took place before the Visean and before the hydrothermal activity associated with upper Carboniferous intrusive activity, and the constant association of the ores with a series of particular paleogeographic events. In spite of their identical origin, the deposits are diverse in aspect because of original mineralogic variations, deposition on an eroded surface, and subsequent metamorphism and hydrothermal activity.
