This short text is an articulate presentation of a group of hypotheses which serve as the basis for treatment of such varied disabilities as stuttering, difficulty in learning to read, failure in speech development, strabismus, and behavioral problems. The essence of these is that unless an infant is allowed to proceed within the confines of a certain timetable of rigidly defined motor and special sense activities he runs the serious risk of impairing his mature cerebral function.

This article attempts to survey the field of learning disabilities in terms of an integrative approach to the various disciplines which have been concerned with the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of children with communication problems, reading problems, and sensory-motor disturbances. A behavioral view of the inseparability of diagnostic and remedial procedures and a survey of some of these procedures are presented, as well as a crystal ball view of future trends in the field of learning disabilities.
