In contrast to much of the previous analysis, this chapter argues that modern Leeds has a united and more coherent character than in past times. It is argued again that the question of identity is a complex one, with Jews able to feel multiple identities. The analysis relies on a number of attitudinal surveys which explore particularly young peoples’ attitudes to current issues. For example, it asked whether people would support Israel or England when they were drawn together in a European football competition. It is argued that young Jews in Leeds are confident and comfortable to display their allegiance publicly, such as lighting Chanukah candles at the Lubavitch centre.

At an earlier meeting [1], we discussed information retrieval in the scanning transmission ion microscope (STIM) compared with the electron microscope at the same energy. We treated elastic scattering contrast, using total elastic cross sections; relative damage was estimated from energy loss data. This treatment is valid for “thin” specimens, where the incident particles suffer only single scattering. Since proton cross sections exceed electron cross sections, a given specimen (e.g., 1 μg/cm2 of carbon at 25 keV) may be thin for electrons but “thick” for protons. Therefore, we now extend our previous analysis to include multiple scattering. Our proton results are based on the calculations of Sigmund and Winterbon [2], for 25 keV protons on carbon, using a Thomas-Fermi screened potential with a screening length of 0.0226 nm. The electron results are from Crewe and Groves [3] at 30 keV.

Based on the author’s experience in conducting fieldwork on religion in Ethiopia, in this article she analyses the complexities of being an insider in a certain socio-political and economic context. Instead of ascribing an essence to insider-ness as a straightforward and definite category, it is argued that insider-ness is a product of dynamic and complex intersubjective interactions and processes. It is an ambiguous position marked by a continuous shift resulting from the researcher’s navigations between multiple identities at different times and environments in relation to research participants. As pointed out by Bourke (2014), the perpetual flux of one’s identity as an insider or an outsider stems from the researcher’s position: gender, class, ethnic background and religious as well as political persuasion. Furthermore, in as much as one enjoys the associated benefits thereof, the insider is faced with myriad challenges due to her or his variegated identities that in turn inform interlocutors’ perceptions, expectations and responses.

Metaphorical elements are a highly productive language means in live reports about sport events on TV. They occur in different relations to what is simultaneously seen on screen and depend on the reporter as well as on the special kind of sport. But nevertheless, general structures and functions of metaphors in those medium-bound oral texts can be indicated; as one of the markers they contribute to what is often called language of sport or maybe rather communicative template of sport. Examples taken from TV reports of the European Football Championship and the Olympic Games (both took place in 2016) are used to illustrate this character of metaphorical expressions in sport reports on TV.

Behavioural finance has shown that investment decisions are the result of not just rational but also emotional brain processes. On the assumption that emotions affect financial markets, it would seem likely that football results might have a measurable effect on financial markets. To test this, this study describes three algorithmic trading systems based exclusively on the results of three top European football teams (Juventus, Bayern München and Paris St Germain) opening long or short positions in the next market season of the futures market of the index of each country (MIB (Milano Italia Borsa), DAX (Deutscher Aktien Index) and CAC (Cotation Assistée en Continu). Depending on the outcome of the last game played a long position was taken after a victory and a short position after a draw or defeat. The results showed that the algorithmic systems were profitable in the case of Juventus and Bayern whereas in the case of PSG, the system was profitable, but in an inverse way. This study shows that investment strategies that take account of sports sentiment could have a profitable outcome.
