Even though transcendentalism never ceased to be present in American culture, during the first decade of the twenty-first century, the gaze of artists and theorists turned to the ideas of the American Renaissance with a hope that had no place during the reign of postmodern irony. With this in mind, the purpose of this article is to discern the adequacy of Emerson’s philosophy for the recovery of realism through the transcendence of language and a new use of Romantic irony. The previous analysis will take us to the New Sincerity movement. The writers of the generation that followed in the wake of David Foster Wallace’s acted as a bridge between the postmodern and the post-postmodern narrative of the beginning of the new millennium. These young writers based their fiction on a critique of institutionalized irony in order to pave the way for the new post 9/11 novel.

A modern GPU is designed with many large thread groups to achieve a high throughput and performance. Within these groups, the threads are grouped into fixed-size SIMD batches in which the same instruction is applied to vectors of data in a lockstep. This GPU architecture is suitable for applications with a high degree of data parallelism, but its performance degrades seriously when divergence occurs. Many optimizations for divergence have been proposed, and they vary with the divergence information about variables and branches. A previous analysis scheme viewed pointers and return values from functions as divergence directly, and only focused on OpenCL 1.x. In this article, we present a novel scheme that reports the divergence information for pointer-intensive OpenCL programs. The approach is based on extended static single assignment (SSA) and adds some special functions and annotations from memory SSA and gated SSA. The proposed scheme first constructs extended SSA, which is then used to build a divergence relation graph that includes all of the possible points-to relationships of the pointers and initialized divergence states. The divergence state of the pointers can be determined by propagating the divergence state of the divergence relation graph. The scheme is further extended for interprocedural cases by considering function-related statements. The proposed scheme was implemented in an LLVM compiler and can be applied to OpenCL programs. We analyzed 10 programs with 24 kernels, with a total analyzed program size of 1,306 instructions in an LLVM intermediate representation, with 885 variables, 108 branches, and 313 pointer-related statements. The total number of divergent pointers detected was 146 for the proposed scheme, 200 for the scheme in which the pointer was always divergent, and 155 for the current LLVM default scheme; the total numbers of divergent variables detected were 458, 519, and 482, respectively, with 31, 34, and 32 divergent branches. These experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme is more precise than both a scheme in which a pointer is always divergent and the current LLVM default scheme.

Service robots usually perform repetitive tasks such as collecting garbage, cleaning the house, among others. This kind of robot needs different skills to perform its daily tasks, being people´s recognition a critical skill. One of the techniques used to improve face recognition is padding. The padding technique increases, by a given scale factor, the bounding box of a detected face. In previous work, we had presented a comparative analysis of the influence of the padding in the algorithm used for face recognition. This paper extends the previous analysis by considering the effect of various padding scale factors among different life stages (i.e., toddler, children, teenager, adult, senior, and golden oldie). The result of this analysis shows that increasing the bounding box of detected faces is less efficient for middle-aged people than for younger and elderly people.

Metro-bikeshare integration, an important way of improving the efficiency of public transportation, has grown rapidly during the last decades in many countries. However, most previous analysis of metro-bikeshare transfer trips were based on limited sample size and the number of recognized metro-bikeshare trips were not sufficient. The primary objective of this study is to derive a method to recognize metro-bikeshare transfer trips. The two data sources are provided by Nanjing Metro Company and Nanjing Public Bicycle Company over the same period from 9–29 March 2016. The identifying method includes three steps: (1) Matching Card Pairs (2) Filtering Card Pairs and (3) Identifying Card Pairs. The case study indicates that the Support Vector Classification (SVC) performs best with a high prediction accuracy of 95.9% using seamless smartcards. The identifying method is then used to recognize the transfer trips from other types of cards, resulting in 17,022 valid metro-bikeshare transfer trips made by 2948 travelers. Finally, travel patterns extracted from the two groups of identified transfer trips are analyzed comparatively. The method proposed presents new opportunities for analyzing metro-bikeshare transfer trip characteristics.

The objective of this article is to improve building productivity, evolving from traditional construction to industrial construction. The methodology used here consists of analysing the use of materials, the construction design, the design of the spatial distribution programme, the use of auxiliary means and resources and the application of lean tools in construction. The results achieved here include a complete building system that integrates the design, project and execution, wherein the construction process is improved and inconsistencies in the final project are reduced. With the application of an industrial manufacturing methodology, the productivity in construction is improved, reducing costs, materials, execution times and waste. These productivity improvements result in construction being more sustainable. As a conclusion of the previous analysis, the elements that must be integrated into a complete building project and the need to incorporate industrial manufacturing into construction processes in order to achieve sustainable architecture are established.

AbstractOn 26 November 2021, the World Health Organization designated the SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.529, Omicron, a variant of concern. However, the phylogenetic and evolutionary dynamics of this variant remain unclear. An analysis of the 131 Omicron variant sequences from November 9 to November 28, 2021 reveals that variants have diverged into at least 6 major subgroups. 86.3% of the cases have an insertion at amino acid 214 (INS214EPE) of the spike protein. Neutrality analysis of DH (−2.814, p<0.001) and Zeng’s E (0.0583, p=1.0) tests suggested that directional selection was the major driving force of Omicron variant evolution. The synonymous (Dsyn) and nonsynonymous (Dnonsyn) polymorphisms of the Omicron variant spike gene were estimated with Tajima’s D statistic to eliminate homogenous effects. Both D ratio (Dnonsyn/Dsyn, 1.57) and ΔD (Dsyn-Dnonsyn, 0.63) indicate that purifying selection operates at present. The low nucleotide diversity (0.00008) and Tajima D value (−2.709, p<0.001) also confirms that Omicron variants had already spread in human population for more than the 6 weeks than has been reported. These results, along with our previous analysis of Delta and Lambda variants, also supports the validity of the Tajima’s D test score, with a threshold value as −2.50, as an accurate predictor of new COVID-19 outbreaks.

Abstract Family and friend caregivers play a critical role in helping older adults live long and healthy lives. Using the construct of "care types" we examine whether caregivers providing more intense care experience higher burden and lower gain compared to caregivers providing less intense care. Data are from the 2015 and 2017 rounds of the National Study of Caregiving (N=2,146), a study of the caregivers of older adults enrolled in the National Health and Aging Trends Study. In a previous analysis, we derived five care types at baseline (2015), that varied in the number and type of care activities, care duration, and regularity of care provided. Caregivers reported whether caregiving was financially, emotionally, and physically difficult for them. Participants were also asked whether caregiving made them more confident, taught them to deal with difficult situations, brought them closer to the recipient, and gave them satisfaction that the recipient was well cared for. We estimated the association between care types derived at baseline and caregiver burden and gains at follow-up using logistic regression. Compared to caregivers in the least intense care type, those in the more intense care types were significantly more likely to report financial and physical burden, as well as increased ability to deal with difficult situations and increased satisfaction that their loved one was well cared for. These associations remained significant after adjusting for confounders. Care types can be used to predict burdens and gains experienced by caregivers and to effectively target caregiver support services and interventions.

Abstract This is the second of two companion papers that discuss accidents caused by robots. In the first paper (Guerra et al., 2021), we presented the novel problems posed by robot accidents, and assessed the related legal approaches and institutional opportunities. In this paper, we build on the previous analysis to consider a novel liability regime, which we refer to as ‘manufacturer residual liability’ rule. This makes operators and victims liable for accidents due to their negligence – hence, incentivizing them to act diligently; and makes manufacturers residually liable for non-negligent accidents – hence, incentivizing them to make optimal investments in R&D for robots' safety. In turn, this rule will bring down the price of safer robots, driving unsafe technology out of the market. Thanks to the percolation effect of residual liability, operators will also be incentivized to adopt optimal activity levels in robots' usage.

A new approach to evaluate the Newtonian flow between concentric rotating spheres is introduced in this paper. A general analytic solution to the problem is deduced using a perturbation method that takes into account the primary and secondary flows produced between the spheres, as well as an alternative analytical method. In order to exemplify the results of the previous analysis, six particular cases were studied. The results of the perturbation method show that under certain circumstances the secondary flow is no negligible, as is usually considered, but it is comparable to the value of the primary one. While the analytical method allows us to simulate the flow with results very similar to those of other authors.

Abstract Background: The addition of ixazomib to the doublet lenalidomide and dexamethasone (RD) in relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) has shown significant benefit in progression free survival (PFS) in the TOURMALINE-MM1 study. Several real-world data including our previous analysis confirmed that the combination IRD is feasible and with fair outcomes even outside the clinical trial. Here we report an updated analysis which is aimed at overall survival (OS) and the PFS2 interval which is defined as the time from the date of treatment initiation to the date of first documentation of progressive disease after initiation of further anti-myeloma treatment or death from any cause. Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 344 patients with RRMM, 127 being treated by IRD and 217 by RD combination. The group characteristics and study design are described elsewhere. 1 The median follow-up of the whole cohort was 28.5 months. The primary endpoint was OS, OS in patients with relapse 1-3, progression free survival (PFS), and PFS2. Secondary endpoints were response rates and toxicity profile. For statistical analysis we used Fisher's exact test or Mann-Whitney U test. Survival measures were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier methodology, and statistical significance was assessed using the log-rank test at a significance level of α = 0.05 (all tests two-sided). Results: The outcomes of OS in the whole cohort were already published before, with significantly longer median OS in the IRD vs RD cohort (mOS 36.6 months vs 26.0 months, p = 0.008).1 In the follow-up analysis, the medians were slightly improved, maintaining a significant difference (mOS 40.9 vs 27.1 months, p = 0.001). In patients treated within relapse 1-3, the results outcomes were even more pronounced (mOS 51.7 vs 27.8 months, p ˂ 0.001). The median PFS was also better in the IRD cohort (mPFS 17.5 vs 12.5 months, p = 0.013) but the results did not substantially differ from our previous analysis. The median PFS2 in the IRD vs RD cohort was significantly longer in the IRD cohort (mPFS2 29.8 vs 21.6 months, p = 0.016). The subsequent therapy included mostly pomalidomide (27.5% vs 30.8%), bortezomib (28.8% vs 28.2%) or thalidomide (10.0% vs 16.2%). Monoclonal antibodies (daratumumab, isatuximab) were more frequently used after IRD combination (21.3% vs 4.3%). The response rates in the IRD vs RD cohort were similar as in our primary analysis: overall response rate (ORR) 73.0% vs 66.8%, with significant difference in very good partial response and better (VGPR+) 38.1% vs 26.3%. The toxicity profile did not reveal any additional safety concerns. Majority of grade 3+ toxicities included hematological toxicity (anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia) and infections, with similar distribution in the cohorts. Conclusion: The treatment of RRMM using the full oral IRD regimen in routine clinical practice is easy, safe and with significantly improved outcomes in comparison to RD doublet. Our follow-up analysis confirmed the impact on OS in patients in the whole cohort including relapse 1-3. The median PFS2 was also longer in the IRD cohort, possibly affected by more frequent use of monoclonal antibodies in the next treatment.
