The unbalanced resource utilization of physical machines (PMs) in cloud data centers could cause resource wasting, workload imbalance and even negatively impact quality of service (QoS). To address this problem, this paper proposes a multi-resource collaborative optimization control (MCOC) mechanism for virtual machine (VM) migration. It uses Gaussian model to adaptively estimate the probability that the running PMs are in the multi-resource utilization balance status. Given the estimated probability of the multi-resource utilization balance state, we propose effective selection algorithms for live VM migration between the source hosts and destination hosts, including adaptive Gaussian model-based VMs placement (AGM-VMP) algorithm and VMs consolidation (AGM-VMC) method. Experimental results show that the AGM-VMC method can effectively achieve load balance and significantly improve resource utilization, reduce data center energy consumption while guaranteeing QoS.

Green cloud data center has become a research hotspot of virtualized cloud computing architecture. And load balancing has also been one of the most important goals in cloud data centers. Since live virtual machine (VM) migration technology is widely used and studied in cloud computing, we have focused on location selection (migration policy) of live VM migration for power saving and load balancing. We propose a novel approach MOGA-LS, which is a heuristic and self-adaptive multiobjective optimization algorithm based on the improved genetic algorithm (GA). This paper has presented the specific design and implementation of MOGA-LS such as the design of the genetic operators, fitness values, and elitism. We have introduced the Pareto dominance theory and the simulated annealing (SA) idea into MOGA-LS and have presented the specific process to get the final solution, and thus, the whole approach achieves a long-term efficient optimization for power saving and load balancing. The experimental results demonstrate that MOGA-LS evidently reduces the total incremental power consumption and better protects the performance of VM migration and achieves the balancing of system load compared with the existing research. It makes the result of live VM migration more high-effective and meaningful.

Virtual machine migration is an effective method to improve the resource utilization of cloud data center. The common migration methods use heuristic algorithms to allocation virtual machines, the solution results is easy to fall into local optimal solution. Therefore, an algorithm called Migrating algorithm based on Genetic Algorithm (MGA) is introduced in this paper, which roots from genetic evolution theory to achieve global optimal search in the map of virtual machines to target nodes, and improves the objective function of Genetic Algorithm by setting the resource utilization of virtual machine and target node as an input factor into the calculation process. There is a contrast between MGA, Single Threshold (ST) and Double Threshold (DT) through simulation experiments, the results show that the MGA can effectively reduce migrations times and the number of host machine used.

Green cloud data center has become a research hotspot of virtualized cloud computing architecture. Since live virtual machine (VM) migration technology is widely used and studied in cloud computing, we have focused on the VM placement selection of live migration for power saving. We present a novel heuristic approach which is called PS-ABC. Its algorithm includes two parts. One is that it combines the artificial bee colony (ABC) idea with the uniform random initialization idea, the binary search idea, and Boltzmann selection policy to achieve an improved ABC-based approach with better global exploration’s ability and local exploitation’s ability. The other one is that it uses the Bayes theorem to further optimize the improved ABC-based process to faster get the final optimal solution. As a result, the whole approach achieves a longer-term efficient optimization for power saving. The experimental results demonstrate that PS-ABC evidently reduces the total incremental power consumption and better protects the performance of VM running and migrating compared with the existing research. It makes the result of live VM migration more high-effective and meaningful.

Further growth of computing performance has been started to be limited due to increasing energy consumption of cloud data centers. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the resource management. Dynamic virtual machines consolidation is a successful approach to improve the utilization of resources and energy efficiency in cloud environments. Consequently, optimizing the online energy-performance trade off directly influences Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper, a novel approach known as Percentage of Overload Time Fraction Threshold (POTFT) is proposed that decides to migrate a Virtual Machine (VM) if the current Overload Time Fraction (OTF) value of Physical Machine (PM) exceeds the defined percentage of maximum allowed OTF value to avoid exceeding the maximum allowed resulting OTF value after a decision of VM migration or during VM migration. The proposed POTFT algorithm is also combined with VM quiescing to maximize the time until migration, while meeting QoS goal. A number of benchmark PM overload detection algorithms is implemented using different parameters to compare with POTFT with and without VM quiescing. We evaluate the algorithms through simulations with real world workload traces and results show that the proposed approaches outperform the benchmark PM overload detection algorithms. The results also show that proposed approaches lead to better time until migration by keeping average resulting OTF values less than allowed values. Moreover, POTFT algorithm with VM quiescing is able to minimize number of migrations according to QoS requirements and meet OTF constraint with a few quiescings.

In cloud data centers, different virtual machine placement strategies will affect the resource utilization efficiency of the whole system. How to improve the overall resource utilization of the system by adjusting the virtual machine placement strategy under limited resources is the focus of current researchers. In this paper, a new virtual machine placement strategy is proposed, which is based on the comprehensive constraints of various system resources. In the process of solving the problem, a multi-objective ant colony optimization algorithm is used. Simulation results show that this method can effectively reduce the number of physical machines activated in the data center, and the accuracy is high.
