Abstract One of the most important concerns of cloud service providers is balancing renewable and fossil energy consumption. On the other hand, the policy of organizations and governments is to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in cloud data centers. Recently, a lot of research has been conducted to optimize the Virtual Machine (VM) placement on physical machines to minimize energy consumption. Many previous studies have not considered the deadline and scheduling of IoT tasks. Therefore, the previous modelings are mainly not well-suited to the IoT environments where requests are time-constraint. Unfortunately, both the sub-problems of energy consumption minimization and scheduling fall into the category of NP-hard issues. In this study, we propose a multi-objective VM placement to joint minimizing energy costs and scheduling. After presenting a modified memetic algorithm, we compare its performance with baseline methods as well as state-of-the-art ones. The simulation results on the CloudSim platform show that the proposed method can reduce energy costs, carbon footprints, SLA violations, and the total response time of IoT requests.

Abstract The process of mapping Virtual Machines (VMs) to Physical Ma- chines (PMs), which is defined as VM placement, affects Cloud Data Centers (DCs) performance. To enhance the performance, optimal placement of VMs regarding conflicting objectives has been proposed in some research, such as Multi-Objective VM reBalance (MOVMrB) and Reinforcement Learning VM reBalance (RLVMrB) in recent years. The MOVMrB algorithm is based on the BBO meta-heuristic algorithm and the RLVMrB algorithm inspired by reinforcement learning, which in both of them the non-dominance method is used to evaluate generated solutions. Although this approach reaches accept- able results, it fails to consider other solutions which are optimal regarding all objectives, when it meets the best solution based on one of these objectives. In this paper, we propose two enhanced multi-objective algorithms, Fuzzy- RLVMrB and Fuzzy-MOVMrB, that are able to consider all objectives when evaluating candidate solutions in solution space. All four algorithms aim to balance the load between VMs in terms of processor, bandwidth, and memory as well as horizontal and vertical load balance. We simulated all algorithms using the CloudSim simulator and compared them in terms of horizontal and vertical load balance and execution time. The simulation results show that Fuzzy-RLVMrB and Fuzzy-MOVMrB algorithms outperform RLVMrB and MOVMrB algorithms in terms of vertical load balancing and horizontal load balancing. Also, the RLVMrB and Fuzzy-RLVMrB algorithms are better in execution time than the MOVMrB and Fuzzy-MOVMrB algorithms.

Dynamic resource allocation of cloud data centers is implemented with the use of virtual machine migration. Selected virtual machines (VM) should be migrated on appropriate destination servers. This is a critical step and should be performed according to several criteria. It is proposed to use the criteria of minimum resource wastage and service level agreement violation. The optimization problem of the VM placement according to two criteria is formulated, which is equivalent to the well-known main assignment problem in terms of the structure, necessary conditions, and the nature of variables. It is suggested to use the Hungarian method or to reduce the problem to a closed transport problem. This allows the exact solution to be obtained in real time. Simulation has shown that the proposed approach outperforms widely used bin-packing heuristics in both criteria.

Data Center energy usage has risen dramatically because of the rapid growth and demand for cloud computing. This excessive energy usage is a challenge from an economic and environmental point. Virtual Machine Placement (VMP) along with virtualization technologies is widely used to manage power utilization in data centers. The assignment of virtual machines to physical machines affects energy consumption. VMP is a process of mapping VMs onto a set of PMs in a data center to minimize total power consumption and maximize resource utilization. The VMP is an NP-hard problem due to its constraints and huge combinations. In this paper, we formulated the problem as a single objective optimization problem in which the objective is to minimize the energy consumption in cloud data centers. The main contribution of this paper is hybrid and adaptive harmony search algorithm for optimal placements of VMs to PMs. HSA with adaptive PAR settings, simulated annealing and local search strategy aims at minimizing energy consumption in cloud data centers with satisfying given constraints. Experiments are conducted to validate the performance of these variations. Results show that these hybrid HSA variations produce better results than basic HSA and adaptive HSA. Hybrid HS with simulated annealing, and local search strategy gives better results than other variants for 80 percent datasets.
