AbstractThe combinatorial study of phylogenetic networks has attracted much attention in recent times. In particular, one class of them, the so-called tree-child networks, are becoming the most prominent ones. However, their combinatorial properties are largely unknown. In this paper we address the problem of exactly counting them. We conjecture a relationship with the cardinality of a certain class of words. By solving the counting problem for the words, and on the basis of the conjecture, several simple recurrence formulas for general cases arise. Moreover, a precise asymptotic analysis is provided. Our results coincide with all current formulas in the literature for particular subclasses of tree-child networks, as well as with numerical results obtained for small networks. We expect that the study of the relationship between the newly defined words and the networks will lead to further combinatoric characterizations of this class of phylogenetic networks.

AbstractEroders are monotonic cellular automata with a linearly ordered state set that eventually wipe out any finite island of nonzero states. One-dimensional eroders were studied by Gal’perin in the 1970s, who presented a simple combinatorial characterization of the class. The multi-dimensional case has been studied by Toom and others, but no such characterization has been found. We prove a similar characterization for those one-dimensional monotonic cellular automata that are eroders even in the presence of random noise.

In this paper, we studied the relations between new types of fuzzy retractions, fuzzy foldings, and fuzzy deformation retractions, on fuzzy fundamental groups of the fuzzy Minkowski space M ˜ 4 . These geometrical transformations are used to give a combinatorial characterization of the fundamental groups of fuzzy submanifolds on M ˜ 4 . Then, the fuzzy fundamental groups of the fuzzy geodesics and the limit fuzzy foldings of M ˜ 4 are presented and obtained. Finally, we proved a sequence of theorems concerning the isomorphism between the fuzzy fundamental group and the fuzzy identity group.
