Let [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we show that for any abelian subgroup [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] the crystallographic group [Formula: see text] has Bieberbach subgroups [Formula: see text] with holonomy group [Formula: see text]. Using this approach, we obtain an explicit description of the holonomy representation of the Bieberbach group [Formula: see text]. As an application, when the holonomy group is cyclic of odd order, we study the holonomy representation of [Formula: see text] and determine the existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms and Kähler geometry of the flat manifold [Formula: see text] with fundamental group the Bieberbach group [Formula: see text].

We provide a description of the fundamental group of the quotient of a product of topological spaces X i, each admitting a universal cover, by a finite group G, provided that there is only a finite number of path-connected components in X g i for every g ∈ G. This generalizes previous work of Bauer-Catanese-Grunewald-Pignatelli and Dedieu-Perroni.

Abstract We observe some suitable examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds for heterotic superstring compactifications. It is reasonable to seek CY threefolds with Euler characteristic equals ±6 because of generation’s number. Hosotani mechanism for violations of the gauge group by the Wilson loops requires such CY space has a non-trivial fundamental group. These spaces can be obtained by factoring the complete intersection Calabi-Yau spaces by the free action of some discrete group. Also we shortly discuss cases when discrete groups act with fixed point sets.

We establish a straightforward estimate for the number of open sets with fundamental group constraints needed to cover the total space of fibrations. This leads to vanishing results for simplicial volume and minimal volume entropy, e.g., for certain mapping tori.

Abstract The trace of the $n$ -framed surgery on a knot in $S^{3}$ is a 4-manifold homotopy equivalent to the 2-sphere. We characterise when a generator of the second homotopy group of such a manifold can be realised by a locally flat embedded $2$ -sphere whose complement has abelian fundamental group. Our characterisation is in terms of classical and computable $3$ -dimensional knot invariants. For each $n$ , this provides conditions that imply a knot is topologically $n$ -shake slice, directly analogous to the result of Freedman and Quinn that a knot with trivial Alexander polynomial is topologically slice.

In this paper, we show that if the Laplacian and gradient of the warping function of a compact warped product submanifold Ω p + q in the hyperbolic space ℍ m − 1 satisfy various extrinsic restrictions, then Ω p + q has no stable integral currents, and its homology groups are trivial. Also, we prove that the fundamental group π 1 Ω p + q is trivial. The restrictions are also extended to the eigenvalues of the warped function, the integral Ricci curvature, and the Hessian tensor. The results obtained in the present paper can be considered as generalizations of the Fu–Xu theorem in the framework of the compact warped product submanifold which has the minimal base manifold in the corresponding ambient manifolds.
