Student personnel professionals are beginning to have key roles and increased involvement in distance learning programs, by administering distance education systems and supporting distance student adjustment, learning, and development. This article presents a work sample exercise for use when interviewing and hiring college student personnel administrators for professional positions in distance learning programs.

This study examined select non-classroom experiences that could have an impact on the critical thinking ability of juniors and seniors at a southern research university. Spending hours in discussions of current issues with peers outside of class was the only variable found to have a significant effect on critical thinking. The authors offer suggestions for faculty members and student personnel administrators to structure student activities to give students more opportunities to discuss issues with their peers.
