Draft Genome Sequences of Heat Shock-Tolerant Microbes Isolated from a Spacecraft Assembly Facility

Heat shock-tolerant microorganisms belonging to the orders Bacillales and Micrococcales were isolated from the Spacecraft Assembly Facility at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and 63 draft genome sequences were assembled and identified. Further analyses of these genomes can provide insight into methods for preventing forward contamination.

Assembly of Bacterial Genome Sequences from Metagenomes of Spacecraft Assembly Cleanrooms

ABSTRACT Characterizing the microbiome of spacecraft assembly cleanrooms is important for planetary protection. We report two bacterial metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) reconstructed from metagenomes produced from cleanroom samples from the Kennedy Space Center’s Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility (KSC-PHSF) during the handling of the Phoenix spacecraft. Characterization of these MAGs will enable identification of the strategies underpinning their survival.

ABSTRACT We report the draft genome sequences of Bacillus glennii V44-8, Bacillus saganii V47-23a, and Bacillus sp. strain V59.32b, isolated from the Viking spacecraft assembly cleanroom, and Bacillus sp. strain MER_TA_151 and Paenibacillus sp. strain MER_111, isolated from the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) assembly cleanroom.
