In a recent news article, “Project Mathematics,” published in The Arithmetic Teacher, Mr. Fred C. Beyer1 reported on the new program of mathematics in California. The project by the County Superintendents' Association to develop a scope and sequence for mathematics is another step toward more effective articulation from one grade to the next and from the elementary to the secondary schools. Other organizations, as well as research programs, curriculum studies, and new textbooks, have influenced the modernization of the elementary arithmetic program.

Instruction in mathematics in the schools of California, Grades K-8, will undergo a change Determined by the needs of the times, aided by research on the part of mathematicians and curriculum workers, and furthered by the California State Board of Education action in the selection of mathematics texts for all grades, the change-over will get into high gear in all schools and probably, to some extent, in all grades by September, 1964.
