As the Chairman of the 9th edition of the Manufacturing Engineering Society International Conference (MESIC 2021) held in Gijόn (Spain) from 23 to 25 of June 2021, I have the honour to present the papers discussed at the conference by researchers and professionals from 18 different countries. This ninth edition was organized by the Manufacturing Engineering Area of the University of Oviedo on behalf of the Manufacturing Engineering Society (SIF). The conference was first held in Calatayud (Spain) in 2005, with the main objective of becoming a forum for the exchange of experiences between national and international researchers and professionals in the field of Manufacturing Engineering. The rest of the editions have been celebrated up to now with this same vocation. IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) publishes here the 140 papers, organised according to the topics of the Conference, that were finally accepted for presentation at the MESIC 2021 after a rigorous peer review process. List of Committees Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee, Editors, Organizer, Promoter and Sponsors and this titles are available in this pdf.

The Special Issue of the Manufacturing Engineering Society 2020 (SIMES-2020) has been launched as a joint issue of the journals “Materials” and “Applied Sciences”. The 14 contributions published in this Special Issue of Applied Sciences present cutting-edge advances in the field of Manufacturing Engineering focusing on advances and innovations in manufacturing processes; additive manufacturing and 3D printing; manufacturing of new materials; Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies; robotics, mechatronics and manufacturing automation; Industry 4.0; design, modeling and simulation in manufacturing engineering; manufacturing engineering and society; and production planning. Among them, the topic “Manufacturing engineering and society” collected the highest number of contributions (representing 22%), followed by the topics “Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies”, “Industry 4.0”, and “Design, modeling and simulation in manufacturing engineering” (each at 14%). The rest of the topics represent the remaining 35% of the contributions.

This paper explores the use of Actor-Network Theory as a tool for exploring the complexity ofsustainability issues in a core Engineering and Society course for second-year students in a large, multidisciplinary engineering program. In the course, Actor Network Theory, which is a method for analyzing sociotechnical issues with an emphasis on the concept of power and its distribution, was introduced to the students through a series of learning activities and an assignment, initially encouraging the students to apply the approach to a system within their own life. Subsequently, the approach was used to analyze complex sociotechnical issues, for example, the use of Coal-based energy in Nova Scotia, and the Coastal Gaslink pipeline dispute in the Wet’suwet'enterritory. This paper describes our approach to introducing Actor Network Theory to engineering students, the benefits and limitations of the approach, and the efficacy of the approach for exploring sustainability issues. Other instructors may consider the introduction of ActorNetwork Theory through courses in Engineering & Society and Engineering Design.

A variety of factors prompted Leavitt, Thurston, Sweet, Worthington, and the other founders of ASME to promote the creation of a new professional engineering society in 1880: need for a forum to discuss technical problems and share views, desire to promote mechanical engineering as a profession, a means of guiding the next generation. One of the primary factors that prompted the formation of ASME, however, was a desire to establishment of codes and standards relevant to the field. Not surprisingly, codes and standards were topics that occupied considerable attention in the early volumes of the Transactions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
