ABSTRACT The first ichthyosaurian specimens discovered from the Upper Triassic of the Russian Arctic (Kotelny Island, New Siberian Islands) are described herein. They include the remains of large- to small-bodied ichthyosaurians originating from six stratigraphic levels spanning the lower Carnian to middle Norian. The material is mostly represented by isolated vertebrae and ribs, which are not possible to accurately diagnose, but also includes specimens comprising associated vertebrae and a fragmentary skeleton that preserves cranial remains (parabasisphenoid, fragmentary quadrate, partial mandible and hyoids). Based on vertebral and rib morphology, we identify the specimens as representatives of the following taxonomic groups: large-bodied shastasaurids, medium-sized indeterminate ichthyosaurians with a single rib facet in the presacral centra, and small euichthyosaurians with double rib facets present throughout the presacral vertebrae that likely represent toretocnemids and/or basal parvipelvians. In addition, the cranial and mandibular remains preserved in one of the specimens, ZIN PH 5/250, were studied using micro-computed tomography. Its mandible is highly similar to that of toretocnemids, whereas the parabasisphenoid demonstrates a peculiar combination of both plesiomorphic and derived character states, providing the first detailed data on this cranial element in a Late Triassic ichthyosaurian. Furthermore, the specimen also demonstrates a distinctive condition of rib articulation in the anteriormost presacral (cervical) vertebrae, which together with other features allows for the erection of a new taxon – Auroroborealia incognita gen. et sp. nov. Although the phylogenetic position of this taxon is uncertain due to its fragmentary nature, its anatomy, indicating toretocnemid or parvipelvian affinities, further supports the previously hypothesised sister-group relationships between these two clades. The morphology of the parabasisphenoid and vertebral column of the new taxon is discussed in broader contexts of the patterns of evolution of these skeletal regions in ichthyosaurs.

The Qamdo Basin in eastern Tibet has significant petroleum potential and previous studies indicate that the basin contains thick potential source rocks of the Late Permian and the Late Triassic ages. In this paper, the petroleum potential of samples from measured the Upper Permian and Upper Triassic outcrop sections was evaluated on the basis of sedimentological, organic petrographic and geochemical analyses. Initial evaluations of total organic carbon contents indicated that shale samples from the Upper Permian Tuoba Formation and the Upper Triassic Adula and Duogala Formations have major source rock potential, while carbonate rocks from the Upper Triassic Bolila Formation are comparatively lean in organic matter More detailed analyses of OM-rich shale samples from the Tuoba, Adula and Duogala Formations included Rock-eval, elemental analyses, gas chromatography and organic petrography. Maceral compositions and plots of atomic O/C versus H/C indicate that the organic matter present in the samples is primarily Type II with a mixed source. Analyses of acyclic isoprenoid biomarkers indicate the organic matter was deposited under reducing and sub-to anoxic conditions. Based on the high vitrinite reflectance (Ro>1.3%) and Rock-eval data, the samples are classified as highly to over-mature, suggesting that the Tuoba, Adula and Duogaila Formation shales may generate thermogenic gas. Source rock intervals in the three formations are interpreted to have been deposited in marginal-marine environment during transgressions and under a warm and moist climatic condition.

Karst caverns in the Upper Triassic dolostones of the Rusinovdel Formation are filled with allochthonous clastics (brecciaconglomerates with maximum boulder size) and locally with speleothems (flowstones). Deposition of the former (diamicton facies) by debris flows resulted from extreme flood events along the upper reaches of Struma river. The polymict material reflects erosion of various rock types in the source area but is dominated by resedimented Lower Triassic red beds. The diamictons are more or less similar to the few known examples from Quaternary karst caves.
