In this paper, Label Setting Algorithm and Dynamic Programming Algorithm had been critically examined in determining the shortest path from one source to a destination. Shortest path problems are for finding a path with minimum cost from one or more origin (s) to one or more destination(s) through a connected network. A network of ten (10) cities (nodes) was employed as a numerical example to compare the performance of the two algorithms. Both algorithms arrived at the optimal distance of 11 km, which corresponds to the paths 1→4→5→8→10 ,1→3→5→8→10 , 1→2→6→9→10  and  1→4→6→9→10 . Thus, the problem has multiple shortest paths. The computational results evince the outperformance of Dynamic Programming Algorithm, in terms of time efficiency, over the Label Setting Algorithm. Therefore, to save time, it is recommended to apply Dynamic Programming Algorithm to shortest paths and other applicable problems over the Label-Setting Algorithm.

Urban rail transit networks seldom provide 24-hour service. The last train is the latest chance for passengers. If passengers arrive too late to catch the last train, the path becomes inaccessible. The network accessibility thus varies depending on the departure time of passenger trips. This paper focuses on the computation method on the time-dependent accessibility of urban rail transit networks in order to facilitate the itinerary planning of passengers. A label setting algorithm is first designed to calculate the latest possible times for Origin–Destination (O–D) pairs, which is the latest departure times of passengers from the origins such that the destinations can be reach successfully. A searching approach is then developed to find the shortest accessible path at any possible departure times. The method is applied in a real-world metro network. The results show that the method is a powerful tool in solving the service accessibility problem. It has the ability to allow passengers to plan an optimal itinerary. Comparison analysis indicates that the proposed method can provide exact solutions in much shorter time, compared with a path enumeration method. Extensive tests on a set of random networks indicate that the method is efficient enough in practical applications. The execution time for an O–D pair on a personal computer with 2.8 GHZ CPU and 4GB of RAM is only 1.2 s for urban rail transit networks with 100 transfer stations.

Satellite task planning not only plans the observation tasks to collect images of the earth surface, but also schedules the transmission tasks to download images to the ground station for users’ using, which plays an important role in improving the efficiency of the satellite observation system. However, most of the work to our knowledge, scheduling the observation and transmission tasks separately, ignores the correlation between them in resource (e.g., energy and memory) consumption and acquisition. In this paper, we study the single-satellite observation and transmission task planning problem under a more accurate resource usage model. Two preprocessing strategies including graph partition and nondominated subpaths selection are used to decompose the problem, and an improved label-setting algorithm with the lower bound cutting strategy is proposed to maximize the total benefit. Finally, we compare the proposed method with other three algorithms based on three data sets, and the experimental result shows that our method can find the near-optimal solution in much less time.
