Despite the emergence of new media, publication of peer-reviewed papers remains the principal way by which scientific research is disseminated. For those of us with British sensibilities about discussing money, it is an uncomfortable truth that publication is not a zero-cost enterprise; articles need to go through various editorial processes, as well as being made available via electronic and/or printed format.
