Deep vein thrombosis followed by internal jugular vein thrombosis as a complication of in vitro fertilization in a woman heterozygous for the prothrombin 3? UTR and factor V Leiden mutations
AbstractWe report an unusual case of internal jugular vein thrombosis in a 57-year-old female, with the recently discovered factor V Leiden (FVR506Q) mutation. The molecular basis of this mutation is described, and the importance of screening for hereditary venous thrombotic states is emphasized.
Superovulation therapy with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment may result in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and a hypercoaguable state. The site of thrombus formation is commonly in the upper venous extremities. One case of bilateral internal jugular vein thrombosis following ovarian hyperstimulation is described. The clinical presentation, investigations and management are discussed.
