This paper is to study the dielectric properties, magnetic properties, and dielectric conductivity of Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyester (PE) composites. The composites with different amount of MWCNTs (5-15%) have been studied in the Ku-Band range (12.4-18 GHz). The rectangular waveguide (WR-62) was used to measure the dielectric properties and magnetic properties of the samples. The results show the dielectric properties and conductivity of MWCNTs/PE composites is increasing with the MWCNTs filler increases. The real part of dielectric properties values increase from 5.5 to 26.6 with increasing the MWCNTs loading from 5 % to 15 %. The increasing of MWCNTs filler in the MWCNTs/PE composites does not effects on magnetic properties, the real part and imaginary part of magnetic properties are approximate to 1 and 0. The highest conductivity of 15 % MWCNTs loading is reach to 11.02 (S/m) at 18 GHz. Keywords: composites, dielectric properties, magnetic properties, conductivity

Recently, ionizing radiation has found an application in nanotechnology especially attributed to the improvement of nanocomposites. In the present paper, we have developed and evaluated radiation cross-linked nanocomposites made of ethylene-octene copolymer (EOC) with 0-15 wt.% of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and irradiated by 5 MeV accelerated electrons. The influence of combined factors of MWCNT filler content and the irradiation up to 150 kGy on the tensile stress-strain properties at 25–50°C was analysed. The cross-linking efficiency was also evaluated. The results indicated improvement in tensile properties with an increase of MWCNT content and the irradiation up to 150 kGy dose. The combined influence of both factors was determined. The gel content of irradiated EOC/MWCNTs was equal to 45-86% that indicated sufficient cross-linking efficacy of EOC with MWCNTs acting as reinforcing fillers in the matrix.

This paper presents the electromagnetic interference properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a novel nano-reinforcement filler in poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymer matrix that was prepared via melt blending mode. Plasticization of PLA was first carried out by PEG, which overcomes its brittleness problem, in order to enhance its flexibility. A waveguide adapter technique was used to measure the dielectric properties ε r , and S-parameters reflection (S11) and transmission (S21) coefficients. The dielectric properties, microwave attenuation performances, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMISE) for all the material under test have been calculated over the full X-Band (8–12 GHz) due to its importance for military and commercial applications. The prepared samples were studied while using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mechanical properties measurements, as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the dielectric properties increased with increased multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) filler, as well as the shielding effectiveness of the MWCNT/PLA/PEG nanocomposites increased with the increasing of MWCNTs. The highest SE total value was found to be 42.07 dB at 12 GHz for 4 wt.% filler content. It is also observed that the attenuation values of the nanocomposites increased with an increase in MWCNTs loading, as well as the power loss values for all of the samples increased with the increase in MWCNTs loading, except the amount of the transmitted wave through the nanocomposites.

ABSTRACTExtensive work has been done on the modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to improve their characteristics. Here, polystyrene (PS) was adsorbed on the surface of MWCNTs by dispersion process, using toluene as medium. PS modified MWCNTs (PS-MWCNTs) have been dispersed in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix to prepare composite, PS-MWCNTs/PMMA. It is expected that PS adsorbed at the surface of the MWCNTs will help in improving the interaction between MWCNTs and PMMA which results uniform and homogeneous dispersion of the former in later. Thus, synthesized composites were characterized by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy to monitor the functionality of developed product. Electrical parameters including conductivity and dielectric properties were measured with the help of LCR meter. Electrical characters of the composites were explored by investigating the effect of contents of PS-MWCNTs on conductivity and dielectric properties. Percolation behaviour was examined and calculated value of percolation threshold was 0.1wt%.
