In this paper we propose a gold-plated photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), in which gold is coated on the external surface of PCF for easy fabrication and practical detection. The finite element method (FEM) is used for the performance analysis, and the numerical results show that the thickness of the gold film, the refractive index of the analyte, the radius of the air hole in the first layer, the second layer, and the central air hole can affect the sensing properties of the sensor. By optimizing the sensor structure, the maximum wavelength sensitivity can reach 11000 nm/RIU and the maximum amplitude sensitivity can reach 641 RIU−1. Due to its high sensitivity, the proposed sensor can be used for practical biological and chemical sensing.

Abstract A dual-core and dual D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with silver and Aluminum Nitride (AlN) films is designed. The distribution characteristics of the electromagnetic fields of core and plasmon modes, as well as the sensing properties are numerically studied by finite element method (FEM). The structure parameters of the designed sensor are optimized by the optical loss spectrum. The results show the resonance wavelength variation of 489 nm for the refractive index (RI) range of 1.36~1.42. In addition, a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 13400 nm/RIU with the corresponding RI resolution of 7.46×10-6 RIU is obtained in the RI range of 1.41~1.42. The proposed sensor with the merits of high sensitivity, low cost and simple structure has a wide application in the fields of RI sensing, such as hazardous gas detection, environmental monitoring and biochemical analysis.

Abstract A high sensitivity near-infrared photonic crystal fiber (PCF) refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is proposed in this paper. The sensing performance of the PCF refractive index sensor is calculated and analyzed by using the finite element method (FEM). The coated metal material selects for chemically stable gold, which is used to induce SPR. The resonant coupling will occurs when the phase matching condition is met between the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode and the fundamental mode. The influence of the diameter of the central hole and the thickness of the gold film on the resonance wavelength and the confinement loss was studied. Numerical results demonstrate that the average sensitivity of the sensor can reach to 3200nm/RIU, which can be used in the field of refractive index detecting.
