Walia Ibex Capra walie is an endemic and endangered species residing in Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia.  It has shifted its range within the Park in the last decade, and in this study our main objective was to provide information on their feeding ecology to inform recovery goals.  We used a scan sampling method to collect foraging information during October 2009 to November 2011.  Our observations suggest a diverse diet of more than 28 species of grasses, forbs, and shrubs.  The most commonly used plants were Festuca sp., Lobelia rhynchopetalum, Helichrysum citrispinum, and Helichrysum horridum.  Walia Ibex were active in feeding before and after mid-day, and time spent feeding was the highest compared with other diurnal activities.  The percentage of time spent feeding on major plant species did not differ between wet and dry seasons (p> 0.05).  Walia Ibex, however, tended to spend more time browsing than grazing.  The generalist nature of foraging behaviour in Walia Ibex most likely contributes to complaints from the local people who witness Walia Ibex raiding crops cultivated in and around the Park.  Thus, the contribution of crop raiding to the shifts in the species’ range towards higher altitudes at Sebatminch within Simien Mountains National Park emphasizes the need to consider foraging ecology as community-based conservation efforts are developed to support Walia Ibex in the Park.

The Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco National Park and Integrated Management Area was established in September 1995. At 3.44 million hectares it is one of South America's largest protected areas. The tropical dry forest of the Chaco, which this reserve protects, is Bolivia's most threatened major lowland habitat type. With the creation of this reserve the protected-area coverage of the Gran Chaco increased to 4.7 per cent. With at least 69 species of mammals (the Chiroptera have not yet been surveyed), it is one of the richest Neotropical sites for this taxonomic group. The Kaa-Iya park is being administered by the Izoceño-Guaraní Indian organization, the Capitanía del Alto y Bajo Izozog, and puts community-based conservation into practice. Threats to the park include encroachment by colonists, ranchers and farmers; the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline; and hunting.

The current study was conducted to investigate the Chitral Gol National Park, as a bliss or risk for biodiversity safeguarding and socio-economic situations of regional people in the park region. The Chitral Gol National Park indicates a vital part in the improvement of the socio-economic situation and also in the management of the biodiversity in park area. The key aim of the park area is generally to enhance the societies’ link in the park area for its better management and conservation through community-based conservation. For this aim, 160 open ended questionnaires were equally distributed and collected in the park area. Results revealed that the local public much satisfied from the park area. 11 villages openly profited from the park area in case of cash, employments and wood fuel etc. The local public greatly concerned in the management of park area. The ecological profits from park were reported well. The administration maintenance was noble in the park area and show energetic role in the management of plantation, flora cover, fauna species etc. Public education and awareness about park areas via education, workshops, seminars, walk campaign, and local government must take obligatory stages for their safeguard and management. The grass cutting programme (GCP) of Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) has been very successful in gaining local people's acceptance of RCNP. The GCP is recognized internationally as a model for park-people conflict resolution, but has seemingly become a spent force. The aim of the present study was to assess the extent to which the GCP is a form of ‘community-based conservation’ on the one hand, or ‘nature-based development’ on the other. During the ten days of open access in 1999, almost 50 000 tonnes of biomass were removed from the Park; the total gross economic value of the GCP in 1999 was more than US$ 1 million. Illegal fuelwood was the single most important product extracted from RCNP and accounted for half of the total quantity and economic value of all resources collected. It is argued that the GCP does not, in its present form, comply with the concept of community-based conservation, but is rather an example of nature-based development, where important natural core areas are exploited in the name of development. This study suggests a two-fold approach to reappraise the importance of the GCP in solving park-people conflicts without ignoring nature conservation. Firstly, access should be provided in different areas at different times instead of opening the whole Park at the same time. Secondly, since for the last 10–15 years buffer-zone community forestry has not been able to substitute fuelwood from RCNP, other ways to address local people's energy demand should be considered. It is argued that park-people conflicts in RCNP have not been solved, but only postponed, especially by compromising forest conservation and the possibility of the GCP to supply villagers with essential products in the future.

The stability of protected areas was influenced by the existence of areas outside it (Meijaard et al., 2006). The more development of the area outside the conservation area, it was necessary to arrange the function of the area to increase the value and opportunities for the use of the area to support development (Kelso et al., 2010). The buffer zone had a very important function, namely to reduce population pressure into conservation areas and nature reserves, provide community economic activities and was an area that allows for sustainable interaction of benefits for the community with conservation areas (Ardhian, 2011). The existence of conservation areas, buffer zones and community economics had a reciprocal relationship that could be beneficial if managed properly (Robinson et al., 2013; and Golar, 2014). This conservation area was increasingly isolated due to exploitative and destructive human activities such as land conversion, encroachment and the resulting increase in human population (Indrawan, 2007; Livawanty et al., 2012; and Golar et al., 2014). A conservation strategy that integrates the uniqueness of resources and the people who live and activities around and within the national park still needs to be explored (Mallombasang, 2012). Abdullah et al. (2013) states that the application of collaboration mechanisms must be followed by safeguards, as a safeguard for its success. One of them was the consolidation of social contracts towards strengthening the buffer zone. The research purposes was to find out the effectiveness of collaboration models that had been applied in overcoming conflicts and find out management strategies through a partnership pattern (process towards social contracts) in an effort to implement collaborative management. This research was conducted in the Lore Lindu National Park area which included 6 buffer villages as samples. The location was determined by consideration as a buffer zone where the community was part of the partnership process. Data analysis was adjusted to the research objectives of qualitative descriptive (in cluster model), fishbone and SWOT analysis. The conclusion was interaction and dependence on various supply of forest resource products that had been going on for generations, and in the end giving birth to positive local wisdom was a major factor in maintaining forest cover in Cluster 1 of Lore Lindu Valley Bada National Park. The experience and learning of collaborative management activities that had been or had been carried out in TNLL were still conventional in nature where community involvement was still mobilized and dominated by BBTNLL management. The non-optimal management of colabotaif in TNLL was dominated by internal factors compared to internal and external factors such as limited resources and access to information, the involvement of stakeholders at the local level which was not yet maximal, the absence or finalization of boundary management, traditional attitudes towards life, and experience bad past in resolving tenure and social conflicts. Global, national and local strategic issues demonstrate the potential for developing collaborative and participatory TNLL management through prospective and competitive Community-based Conservation Partnerships (KKM) in the future. Four important components as a policy strategy that must be carried out based on SWOT in the development of KKM in TNLL were strengthening the legality status of the area through mapping boundaries and preparing participatory zoning, empowering parties, especially local institutions and resources, changing paradigms in resolving tenurial and social conflicts, and developing diversity alternative livelihood sources. Collaborative Management that begins with a social contract in the Community-based Conservation Partnership (KKM) policy, besides having a huge opportunity in overcoming tenurial and social conflicts in the LLNP, also provided certainty and guarantees the sustainability of more equitable and participatory management.

A construction of breakwaters and other shoreline structures on part of a coast influences drift sand transport in the bay, and causes comprehensive topographic changes on the beach. This study investigated shoreline and coastal changes, taking as an example of Shiraragahama Beach in Miiraku on the northwestern end of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture (Kyushu, Japan). Miiraku, adjacent to Saikai National Park, appears in the revered 8th century poetry collection “Manyoshu” and served as a port for a ship taken by the Japanese envoy to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-709). Because of the recent development of breakwaters for a fishing harbor, the shore environments of this beach have changed significantly. In this study, the status of silt deposits and topographic changes on this beach arising from the construction of a harbor breakwater were evaluated by comparing aerial photographs taken in different years. Next, the changes in the shoreline visible from aerial photographs from 1947 to 2014 were analyzed. Lastly, the altitude of the beaches was measured using accurate survey methods. The following results were obtained: 1) coastal erosion made rock cliffs to fall off along the shore and deposited sand on this beach; 2) the more serious advances or retreats of the shoreline took place around shoreline structures; 3) sandbars and beach cliffs were formed.
