An intense photoemission feature is observed at a binding energy of ~10 eV in the UV photoemission spectra from the (0001) surfaces of bulk single crystals of rare-earth metals. This emission cannot be explained in terms of ground state electronic structure and we have been unable to attribute its existence to the presence of contamination of the surface. We present some evidence that may indicate its origin lies in the creation, by the photoemission process, of a metastable two-hole final state.

Microwave absorption phenomena have been observed in single crystals of the rare-earth metals Tb, Dy, Ho and Er, at frequencies of 9.44 and 35.3 Gc/s in the temperature range 10 to 290 °K. All of these metals show microwave absorption at the critical field transitions. In Tb and Dy, additional absorption lines have been observed which are associated with the ferromagnetic spin configuration. The microwave results are discussed in terms of the normal mode frequencies derived on the basis of the spin wave approximation.
