Heart disease is the major cause of death in diabetes, a disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and cardiovascular complications. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to diastolic dysfunction and heart failure in diabetes, but its molecular basis has remained obscure, in part because of its multifactorial origins. Here we employed comparative transcriptomic methods with quantitative verification of selected transcripts by reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR to characterize the molecular basis of DCM in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes of 16-wk duration. Diabetes caused left ventricular disease that was accompanied by significant changes in the expression of 1,614 genes, 749 of which had functions assignable by Gene Ontology classification. Genes corresponding to proteins expressed in mitochondria accounted for a disproportionate number of those whose expression was significantly modified in DCM, consistent with the idea that the mitochondrion is a key target of the pathogenic processes that cause myocardial disease in diabetes. Diabetes also induced global perturbations in the expression of genes regulating cardiac fatty acid metabolism, whose dysfunction is likely to play a key role in the promotion of oxidative stress, thereby contributing to the pathogenesis of diabetic myocardial disease. In particular, these data point to impaired regulation of mitochondrial β-oxidation as central in the mechanisms that generate DCM pathogenesis. This study provides a comprehensive molecular snapshot of the processes leading to myocardial disease in diabetes.

In this article, we introduce a probabilistic verification algorithm for stochastic regular expressions over a probabilistic extension of the Action based Computation Tree Logic (ACTL*). The main results include a novel model checking algorithm and a semantics on the probabilistic action logic for stochastic regular expressions (SREs). Specific to our model checking algorithm is that SREs are defined via local probabilistic functions. Such functions are beneficial since they enable to verify properties locally for sub-components. This ability provides a flexibility to reuse the local results for the global verification of the system; hence, the framework can be used for iterative verification. We demonstrate how to model a system with an SRE and how to verify it with the probabilistic action based logic and present a preliminary performance evaluation with respect to the execution time of the reachability algorithm.

Article presents the results of testing managers’ behavior and response towards business environment. The study develops ideas how to extend current management theory with behavioral approach. Research method is based on in-depth empirical qualitative analysis, results are subject of quantitative verification using statistical methods which allows reaching better results. Research proceeds inductively, it means that new knowledge is generated as outcome and matched to theories. Decisions are examined as responses towards business environment components, correlations and significances between active or passive managers’ behavior are demonstrated. Proactive managerial approach is characterized by frequent change and diversification in suppliers, customers, human resources and product portfolio. As a conclusion, managerial response can be interpreted as a product of managers’ activity, personal preferences and abilities. The re-orientation towards recognition of active or passive behavior is developed and matched towards current theories. It can be assumed, that the current scientific discussion is potentially relevant in seeking to explain the role of individual manager. In summary, the analysis and the outcomes have proved managers’ exceptional flexibility in counteracting actively the shortcomings of external context.
