SummarySpectrophotometry of peculiar A stars shows that their flux distributions match those of main sequence stars in a gross sense in the optical region λ 3300-7100 although many magnetic peculiar A stars possess broad continuous absorption features not seen in the main sequence stars. In an attempt to explain these features, locations of bound-free discontinuities were computed using known energy levels for the relevant atomic species of those elements which are known to be overabundant. Most of these possible candidates can be eliminated as contributors.

AbstractIn this paper we exploit some compactness properties of the set of quasiminimizers of a functional with free discontinuities with the aim of obtaining blow-up techniques. These techniques are finally applied to show regularity near the boundary of the minimizers of the Mumford-Shah functional.

We introduce a functional for image segmentation which takes into account the transparencies (or shadowing) and the occlusions between objects located at different depths in space. By minimizing the functional, we try to reconstruct a piecewise smooth approximation of the input image, the contours due to transparencies, and the contours of the objects together with their hidden portions. The functional includes a Mumford–Shah type energy and a term involving the curvature of the contours. The variational properties of the functional are studied, as well as its approximation by Γ-convergence. The comparison with the Nitzberg–Mumford variational model for segmentation with depth is also discussed.
