Anomaly of the Work Hardening of Zn-Cu Single Crystals Oriented for Slip in Secondary SystemsThe copper alloyed (up to 1.5%) zinc single crystals oriented for slip in non-basal systems (orientation close to < 1120 >) were subjected to compression test within a range of temperatures of 77-293K. It has been stated, that Zn-Cu crystals exhibit characteristic anomalies of the thermal dependence of yield stress and of the strain hardening exponent. Both of them are related to the change in type and sequence of active non-basal slip systems: pyramidal of the 1storder {1011} < 1123 > (Py-1) and pyramidal of the 2ndorder {1122} < 1123 > (Py-2). The temperature anomaly of the yield stress results from the change of the slip from Py-2 systems to simultaneous slip in the Py-2 and Py-1 (Py-2 + Py-1) systems, occurring in the preyielding stage. On the other hand, sequential activation of pyramidal systems taking place in advanced plastic stage (i.e. the first Py-2 and next Py-2 + Py-1 systems) is responsible for temperature anomaly of strain hardening exponent. Increase in copper addition favors the activity of Py-2 systems at the expense of Py-1 slip, what leads to a drastic differences in plastic behavior of zinc single crystals.

The last generation of PWR, the European Pressurizer Reactor, is being built both in Finland at Olkiluoto and in France at Flamanville where it will be the second unit in operation in two years. The conception of the reactor has no fundamental differences compared with the last French and German generations (i.e. N4 1450 MW and KONVOI 1300 MW). In fact the EPR is a synthesis of the best knowledge from both parts of Rhin river. Nevertheless, for what concerns the primary and secondary systems, few new issues have been implemented and they have important consequences for the pre-service inspection programme. First of it, main coolant lines and main components are declared break preclusion that means another approach for the in-service inspection and the requirements for pre-service inspection. A second one, is that the 1999 ministerial order will apply for the first time on a new unit. The inspection programme has to take it into account particularly in terms of NDE performance demonstration. In terms of structural integrity, the most important areas have been reviewed with fast fracture and fatigue criteria to determine the levels of NDE qualifications. This paper describes the important steps to reach the PSI and what is being developed in terms of NDE in relation to the structural integrity. Several examples are given to illustrate how EDF prepares the PSI of the EPR.

As with higher-education institutions around the world, British Columbia (BC) and Ontario are increasingly faced with demographic and market pressures that erode the traditional difference between the university and non-university sectors (i.e., colleges and institutes). Key components that ensure these provinces’ institutions preserve their unique roles and differentiations in a changing context, partially driven by their governments, include research mandates, transparency in institutional governance, and strategic documents that resist the academic drift created by institutional isomorphism. Both governments are actively reshaping their post-secondary systems to align with national or regional economic needs, increasing access, streamlining degree completion, and responding to community pressure to have a university or a degree-granting institution. An analysis of the enabling legislation, government policy directives, and institutional documents of both provinces shows that there is a blurring in the distinction between colleges and universities, and the costs associated with this.
