For several decades mathematics educators have been on the lookout for a “unifying concept” that would transform mathematics from a sequence of compartmentalized subject areas into one unified whole. Once an educator has decided that he has found the one unifying concept. he rewrites secondary school mathematics to conform to this concept. The philosophy seems to be that if a mathematical development can be made to conform to the unifying concept selected, it must be made to do so.
