Purpose This study aims to explore key factors influencing the work of interdisciplinary university research teams of small size. Design/methodology/approach This is a multiple-case study of four interdisciplinary university research teams of small size in which science and/or engineering was an important component. Findings Data analysis revealed 17 critical factors classified into five groups. Although some factors were more influential than others, it was rather multiple factors at various levels of analysis, and not a single factor, that influenced the work of research teams. Another important finding was the identified need to develop project management capacity of university researchers. The study also revealed two strategies, conditioned on the availability of funds, that small university research teams use as a way to adapt to situational demands and research opportunities. Originality/value Although previous research examined various aspects pertinent to the work of industry research teams and large research groups, empirical research into interdisciplinary university research teams of small size has been limited.

Better medicines for children: challenges and unmet needs This review deals with the use of medicinal products in children. Many medicinal products administered routinely to paediatric patients have been either not licensed for use in children (unlicensed use) or have been prescribed outside the terms of their product license (off-label prescribing). A lot of surveys have been conducted in the context of identifying the extent of off-label used drugs in children documenting high rates (45-60 %) of such use. Recognising and meeting challenges as development of suitable formulations for very young children and realization of clinical trials involving children present important steps in the enhancement of the present situation. To improve the health of children in Europe, the Regulation (EC) No 1901/2006 addressing the pharmaceutical industry, research teams and member states proposing important incentives and obligations was assigned. Paediatric Investigation Plan and Paediatric Use Marketing Authorisation present the key measures of the EU regulation on medicinal products for paediatric patients.

Translational medicine is the emerging scientific discipline of the last decade which will set the benchmark for the pharmaceutical industry research and development, integrates inputs from the basic sciences of computer modeling and laboratory research through the pre-clinical and clinical phases of human research to the assimilation of new therapies and treatments into everyday practice of patient care and prevention. With this brief insight authors tried in their humble way to summarize the underlying basis, the present and the potential future of this emerging view, to draw attention to some of the challenges and tasks it faces and to highlight some of the promising approaches, trends and model developments and applications. In November 2016, a group of students from the Americas participated in an Inter-American Institute for Global Change Researchfunded two-week course organized by professors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The aim was to teach students and young researchers how to collaborate with non-scientists to conduct socioecological systems research in a transdisciplinary manner. This article will review the benefits as well as the challenges to doing so. It concludes with recommendations that other research teams can follow when conducting similar research that crosses disciplinary and international borders.
