There has been a long controversy over the likely impact of population dynamics on economic growth and development. As long ago as 1789 the Reverend Thomas Malthus argued in his famous ‘Essay on the Principle of Population’ that food production would not keep pace with the population's natural proclivity to grow in an unchecked fashion. In the absence of prudential checks, the result would be starvation, vice, and misery, with a tendency for economies to stagnate at a subsistence or poverty level of income.

O cinema nas últimas décadas atingiu um ápice de produção e arrecadação até então nunca vivenciada. A franquia Marvel Studios é uma delas, arrecadando valores na casa dos bilhões de dólares em bilheteria. Essas peculiaridades, chamaram a atenção dos autores, de modo que, o presente texto busca analisar esse blockbuster trazendo à luz, narrativas e elementos subjacentes que remontam, econômica e filosoficamente, pressupostos oriundos do séc. XVIII. Especialmente, a Tese Malthusiana de controle populacional. Metodologicamente, realizou-se uma “decopagem” do filme Avengers: Infinity War, como proposta de interpretação e compreensão de como e por quê uma franquia de renome elegeu como “pano de fundo” de sua trama ficcional, o ideário de Thomas Malthus (1766-1834). Os elementos constatados, subjacentes, ao enredo do filme são provocativos e reveladores.
