Institutionalising Sustainable Production Practices: Malaysia’s Solar Photovoltaic Industry

While smallholders play a significant contribution on Indonesian oil palm production, they are confronted to sustainability challenges. This study aims to analyze determinants of their behaviour to apply sustainable practices. Theory of Planned Behavior was applied to examine the effect of attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and past behavior toward smallholders' intention to implement sustainable oil palm production practices. In this study the sustainable practices include applying organic fertilizer, integrated pest management, non-fire land clearing, certified seed and participating in a farmer group. A survey was carried out over 242 oil palm smallholders in Kampar, Riau. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Square (PLS) program was employed to examine our hypothesis. The results show that attitudes, perceived behavioral control and past behavior have positive and significant effects on smallholders' intention to implement sustainable production practices, whereas subjective norms seems to be not significant. Smallholders tend to be individually independent in making a decision or taking action. Hence, improving attitude toward sustainability, for example, through extension service or training and providing incentives to overcome perceived behavioural control are expected to be an effective measure to encourage sustainability practices among oil palm smallholders.

Background: This study analyzes sustainable coffee production and its competitive perspectives. The present study explains the understanding of sustainable production practices with a triple bottom line approach examining the relationship between production practices and competitiveness. The adoption of a sustainable development strategy has become important for companies as they cannot only be environment friendly but also gain a competitive advantage. The recent studies even found that environmental sustainability has a direct and positive relationship with competitiveness. Objective: The main objective of this study is to find out sustainable coffee production practices and competitive perspectives. Method: The research is descriptive. It explains the data and their characteristics statistically without manipulation. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data using a survey method.Result: The most significant observation of the study is that the strenuous working condition of coffee production changes the living standard of the people in the community in the future. In this study, the majority of farmers responded that they were practicing sustainable coffee production. They were aware of the environmental aspect of coffee production practices and sustainable way of production leads to competitiveness in international markets. Conclusion: The research concluded that the independent variables economic aspect, social aspect, and environmental aspect of sustainable production practices have a significant positive relationship with competitiveness.Implication: The findings of the paper imply that the adoption of a sustainable development strategy has become more important for the companies as they cannot only be environment friendly but also gain a competitive advantage.

Abstract Companies are increasingly implementing sustainable solutions as they face a growing sustainability demands from different stakeholders. The question is whether car manufacturers adhered to sustainable production principles and at what level they are doing it in practice. The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP) is used as a model to analyse the main aspects of sustainable production and assess the companies in the automotive sector in European Union. The data was collected from the Corporate Social Responsibility/ Sustainability reports of the individual car manufacturers found in the online data base of Global Reporting Initiative. Empirical evidence shows the adherence of these companies to the LCSP sustainable production principles. All the studied companies seem to be conscious of the significance of sustainability for the automotive industry. Although most of the sustainable production practices are focused on the environmental dimension of sustainability, employee and social aspects are not ignored in the reports.

Abstract Production activities of companies significantly impact society and environment. It is high time to re-think many of industry’s practices and to change manufacturing processes in a way that allow the company to increase its competitiveness, while at the same time help to achieve sustainable growth. The sustainable production is a concept that is able to strengthen such transformation. The aim of this paper is to present empirical evidence of implementation of the sustainable production practices in the selected company from metal industry. The principles of the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP) are used as a model to assess the main aspects of sustainable production in practices of the company. Empirical evidence shows that in each of the analysed issue some practices have been implemented, however there were identified some deficit areas. Therefore, at the end of the paper the improvements actions were proposed that could be implemented in the analysed company as part of the sustainable management programme.
