In the two decades since its first significant appearance, malware has become the most prominent and costly threat to modern IT systems. This chapter examines the nature of malware evolution. It highlights that, as well as the more obvious development of propagation techniques, the nature of payload activities (and the related motivations of the malware creators) is also significantly changing, as is the ability of the malware to defeat defences. Having established the various facets of the threat, the discussion proceeds to consider appropriate strategies for malware detection and prevention, considering the role of modern antivirus software, and its use alongside other network security technologies to give more comprehensive protection. It is concluded that although malware is likely to remain a significant and ever-present threat, the risk and resultant impacts can be substantially mitigated by appropriate use of such safeguards.

Estimating the benefits of network security systems is important for security decisions since considerable resources are spent on them and organizations need to know the returns on their investments. The objective of the model presented here is to improve management decisions. Better decisions imply greater security for the budget. This model has a number of novel features such as a probabilistic sub-model for the detection and response process, a new attack/damage matrix based on damage-type and cyber-attacks by category, and extensive sensitivity analyses. The results suggest a number of insights into the factors affecting the benefits from sensors such as the effects of non-linear relationships between the rate of attacks and the damages caused. The key role of the value of sensitive information is identified. The model helps identify the conditions under which a new security system provides enough benefits to justify its purchase.

Security is concerned with protecting assets. The aspects of security can be applied to any situation- defense, detection and deterrence. Network security plays important role of protecting information, hardware and software on a computer network. Denial of service (DOS) attacks causes great impacts on the internet world. These attacks attempt to disrupt legitimate user's access to services. By exploiting computer's vulnerabilities, attackers easily consume victim's resources. Many special techniques have been developed to protest against DOS attacks. Some organizations constitute several defense mechanism tools to tackle the security problems. This paper has proposed various types of attacks and solutions associated with each layers of OSI model. These attacks and solutions have different impacts on the different environment. Thus the rapid growth of new technologies may constitute still worse impacts of attacks in the future.
