Individual condition at one stage of the annual cycle is expected to influence behaviour during subsequent stages, yet experimental evidence of food-mediated carry-over effects is scarce. We used a food supplementation experiment to test the effects of food supply during the breeding season on migration phenology and non-breeding behaviour. We provided an unlimited supply of fish to black-legged kittiwakes ( Rissa tridactyla ) during their breeding season on Middleton Island, Alaska, monitored reproductive phenology and breeding success, and used light-level geolocation to observe non-breeding behaviour. Among successful breeders, fed kittiwakes departed the colony earlier than unfed controls. Fed kittiwakes travelled less than controls during the breeding season, contracting their non-breeding range. Our results demonstrate that food supply during the breeding season affects non-breeding phenology, movement and distribution, providing a potential behavioural mechanism underlying observed survival costs of reproduction.

Abstract We explored the breeding behaviour of a threatened amphibian, the natterjack toad, at its northern range limit in Estonia, to determine the extent to which reproduction is affected by harsh and unstable climatic conditions. Using photo identification of specimens, we found that in optimal weather conditions males formed three breeding cohorts, while in adverse conditions only a single cohort occurred and under extreme conditions reproduction was skipped entirely. During the extended breeding season, larger males participated in reproduction throughout the breeding period, while smaller males appeared in later cohorts. Breeding success was related to the calling effort of a male, where larger males had greater mating success than smaller ones. We found that the natterjack toad males exhibit significant plasticity in reproductive behaviour at the northern range limit, which, given the energetic cost of reproduction and the increased risk of predation, allows them to increase their fitness at high latitudes.

Ergasilus yumaricussp. n. (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida, Ergasilidae) é proposta. Os espécimens foram coletados dos filamentos branquiais de Pygocentrus nattereri, Serrasalmus rhombeuse Pristobrycon eigenmannido Rio Guaporé próximo à Pimenteiras, rios Guaporé e Mamoré próximo à Surpresa, rio Jiparaná próximo à Jiparaná e Pacaás Novos próximo à Guajará-Mirim, Estado de Rondônia, Brasil. A nova espécie tem uma seta forte, pectinada e falciforme no primeiro exopodito, indicando uma relação com outras seis espécies amazônicas. Esta espécie difere das outras na forma do corpo, ornamentações das pernas, antenas e urossomitos.

Foi estudada a fauna de metazoários parasitos de Pygocentrus nattereri capturadas no lago Piranha, durante as fases do ciclo hidrológico do ano de 2007. Foi verificada a relação entre o fator de condição e a ocorrência de parasitos, e também a viabilidade da utilização da fauna parasitária de P. nattereri como bioindicadora da saúde do ambiente. Foram coletados monogenóideos das espécies Amphithecium microphalum, Amphitecium brachycirrum, Amphitecium calycinum, Amphithecium catalaoensis, Amphithecium junki, Pithanothecium amazonensis e Rhinoxenus piranhus, o nematóide Procamallanus inopinatus, copépodos da espécie Miracetyma sp. e o isópoda Anphira branchialis. Não houve correlação significativa entre a ocorrência dos parasitos com o fator de condição dos peixes. Houve variações significativas entre os índices parasitários nos diferentes períodos do ciclo hidrológico e P. nattereri satisfez os requisitos descritos na literatura para selecionar um peixe hospedeiro e sua parasitofauna como bioindicadora.

In the tropics, studies on the ecology of host-parasite interactions are incipient and generally related to taxonomic aspects. The main objective of the present work was to analyze ecological aspects and identify the metazoan fauna of ectoparasites that infest the piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri. In May 2002, field samples were collected in the rio Araguaia basin, State of Goiás (Brazil). A total of 252 individuals of P. nattereri were caught with fishhooks and 32.14% were infested with ectoparasite crustaceans. The recorded ectoparasites were branchiurans, Argulus sp. and Dolops carvalhoi and the isopods Braga patagonica, Anphira branchialis and Asotana sp. The prevalence and mean intensity of branchiurans (16.6% and 1.5, respectively) and isopods (15.5% and 1.0, respectively) were similar. Isopods were observed in the gills of the host; branchiurans were more frequent where the skin was thinner, and facilitated attachment and feeding. The ventral area, the base of the pectoral fin and the gular area were the most infested areas. The correlations between the standard length of the host and the variables intensity and prevalence of crustaceans parasitism, were significant only for branchiurans (rs = 0.2397, p = 0.0001; chi2 = 7.97; C = 0.19). These results suggest that both feeding sites and body size probably play an important role in the distribution and abundance of ectoparasites.
