This report presents the latest results on structure functions, as available at the Lepton-Photon Symposium 1999. It focuses on three experimental areas: new structure function measurements, in particular from HERA at low x and high Q2; results on light and heavy flavor densities; and determinations of the gluon distribution and of αs. As the talk was delivered at a historic moment and place, a few remarks were added recalling the exciting past and looking into the promising future of deep inelastic scattering (DIS).

We obtain improved parton distributions from a structure function analysis which includes new data on deep inelastic scattering and on dilepton production. These lead to improved predictions for σ(W)/σ(Z), which when combined with the forthcoming data from [Formula: see text] colliders, will give tighter constraints on the values of mt and Ny. We emphasize how new measurements of the W± charge asymmetry may resolve the EMC — BCDMS F2 discrepancy and hence sharpen the prediction for σ(W)/σ(Z) even further.

In this paper, we obtain the integrated flavor asymmetry of the sea quarks in the proton, [Formula: see text], with the help of the truncated moments approach elaborated in our previous papers. We use the difference between the light sea-quark distributions [Formula: see text] extracted from Drell–Yan (DY) NuSea/E866 measurements of the cross-section ratio [Formula: see text] and from the recent global analysis of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) [Formula: see text] data incorporating the reanalyzed neutron structure function. In our analysis, we also include the most recent DY data from the Fermilab SeaQuest/E906 experiment.
