A mathematical model of nonlinear oscillations of a gas bubble in a liquid is proposed, in which the change of the bubble surface shape is represented as a series of spherical harmonics, and the equations are accurate up to the third order with respect to the distortion amplitudes of the bubble spherical shape. It is shown that the application of the refined model can lead to modes of oscillation that differ from those obtained using the second-order model.

In the present paper the dynamics of a single gas bubble under the influence of an acoustic field is studied, taking mass transfer through the moving bubble wall into account. Mass transfer is calculated separately in the diffusion problem. Due to changes in the pressure inside the bubble caused by oscillations of its volume, the concentration of the gas dissolved in the liquid undergoes oscillations of large amplitude near the bubble boundary. To eliminate the computational problems associated with the moving boundary, the convection-diffusion equations describing the transport of a gas dissolved in a liquid are written in Lagrangian coordinates.

AbstractWe propose a new approach to the generation of acoustic frequency combs (AFC)—signals with spectra containing equidistant coherent peaks. AFCs are essential for a number of sensing and measurement applications, where the established technology of optical frequency combs suffers from fundamental physical limitations. Our proof-of-principle experiments demonstrate that nonlinear oscillations of a gas bubble cluster in water insonated by a low-pressure single-frequency ultrasound wave produce signals with spectra consisting of equally spaced peaks originating from the interaction of the driving ultrasound wave with the response of the bubble cluster at its natural frequency. The so-generated AFC posses essential characteristics of optical frequency combs and thus, similar to their optical counterparts, can be used to measure various physical, chemical and biological quantities.

The sp2 rich amorphous carbons have a wide variety of microstructures ranging from flat sheetlike structures such as glassy carbon to highly curved materials having similar local ordering to the fullerenes. These differences are most apparent in the region of the graphite (0002) reflection of the energy filtered diffracted intensity obtained from these materials (Fig. 1). All these materials consist mainly of threefold coordinated atoms. This accounts for their similar appearance above 0.8 Å-1. The fullerene curves (b,c) show a string of peaks at distance scales corresponding to the packing of the large spherical and oblate molecules. The beam damaged C60 (c) shows an evolution to the sp2 amorphous carbons as the spherical structure is destroyed although the (220) reflection in fee fcc at 0.2 Å-1 does not disappear completely. This 0.2 Å-1 peak is present in the 1960 data of Kakinoki et. al. who grew films in a carbon arc under conditions similar to those needed to form fullerene rich soots.
