Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato causes seed piece decay and stem and tuber lesions, resulting in delayed emergence and uneven stands, low-vigor plants and unmarketable tubers. Rhizoctonia prevention effectiveness of three fungicide/fir bark dusts and nontreated tubers were compared on three varieties. Seedpieces of Viking, Atlantic and Norkotah 278 were treated and planted in separate commercial fields. A randomized complete-block design with four replications with four 26-foot rows per treatment plot included four treatments: 0.5 lb Maxim, 1.0 lb Tops MZ, and 1.5 lb Nubark Captan dust/100 lb seed. Plant stems, stolons and tubers were examined for Rhizoctonia infection at the tuber initiation stage and tubers were examined again at mature stage. Maxim and Tops MZ reduced stolon infection in Atlantic and Norkotah 278 and reduced stem infection in Norkotah 278. Plants from Maxim treated tubers produced more stems/plant in Norkotah 278 and produced more weight of tubers weighing less than four oz in all three varieties. Differences in seed tuber conditioning and mechanical damage in seed handling increase variability of treatment effects. Repeated testing of potato seed piece treatments in Texas High Plains conditions is the best way to confirm potential of beneficial effects of seed treatment.

Conestoga was registered in Canada in 1982. It has been readily accepted by chip producers and processors in Manitoba, although little information on the effect of commercial production practices on the yield and processing quality under Manitoba conditions is available. In this study, the effect of within-row seed piece spacing at three harvest dates on Conestoga potatoes for the early-season chip processing market was evaluated under rainfed conditions in southern Manitoba in 1982, 1983 and 1986. Treatments consisted of spacings of 22, 30, 38 and 46 cm between seed pieces within the row, with 1 m between row centers, harvested at 10-d intervals starting at 75 ± 5 d after planting (DAP) each year. As spacing between seed pieces increased, total, small and maingrade tuber yield and number, and specific gravity decreased. Large tuber yield and number increased. The number of mainstems per plant, the incidence of hollow heart and chip color were unaffected. Delaying harvest resulted in an increased yield of total and maingrade tubers, and higher specific gravity. The highest marketable yield (maingrade plus large tubers) resulted from the 22-cm in-row spacing. The total number of tubers harvested and the number of maingrade tubers increased between 75 and 85 DAP, but did not increase substantially after 85 DAP. Chip color and the incidence of hollow heart were not significantly affected by harvest date. Key words: Potato, population, spacing, harvest date, hollow heart, chip color

Tuber tissue calcium has been linked to several potato quality characteristics, including internal defects and the susceptibility of tubers to decay by soft rotting Erwinia species. We were particularly interested in studying the relationship between supplemental calcium fertilization during the seed tuber production cycle to raise the seed piece calcium concentration and the impact on crop performance the following season. The role of seed tuber tissue calcium level on seed piece decay, growth, development, and performance of the plant was evaluated for cultivars Russet Burbank, Dark Red Norland, Atlantic, Superior, and Snowden. This study was performed over four growing seasons. Seed tubers were raised with varying calcium and the following season, individual tubers (over 3,000 total for 4 years of study) were sampled for calcium and hand planted in the field. They were evaluated for seed piece decay and total tuber yield during the growing season. Seed tubers raised with supplemental calcium resulted in significantly higher mean calcium content than the control tubers. In general, calcium-raised seed tubers tended to produce a more vigorous main sprout and higher tuber yield. We also found that there are significant differences among these cultivars for the characteristics measured. Consistently, in all three years, `Atlantic' responded to test conditions with the lowest decay values, and `Dark Red Norland' consistently showed the highest decay values. This suggests that there may be a genetic component involved in these two responses and these genotypic differences could be exploited to improve cultivated potatoes.
