One major question in Fractional Calculus is to better understand the role of the initial values in fractional differential equations. In this sense, there is no consensus about what is the reasonable fractional abstraction of the idea of “initial value problem”. This work provides an answer to this question. The techniques that are used involve known results concerning Volterra integral equations, and the spaces of summable fractional differentiability introduced by Samko et al. In a few words, we study the natural consequences in fractional differential equations of the already existing results involving existence and uniqueness for their integral analogues, in terms of the Riemann–Liouville fractional integral. In particular, we show that a fractional differential equation of a certain order with Riemann–Liouville derivatives demands, in principle, less initial values than the ceiling of the order to have a uniquely determined solution, in contrast to a widely extended opinion. We compute explicitly the amount of necessary initial values and the orders of differentiability where these conditions need to be imposed.

In this paper, we research CFR fractional differential equations with the derivative of order 3<α<4. We prove existence and uniqueness theorems for CFR-type initial value problem. By Green’s function and its corresponding maximum value, we obtain the Lyapunov-type inequality of corresponding equations. As for application, we study the eigenvalue problem in the sense of CFR.

A spectral deferred correction method is presented for the initial value problems of fractional differential equations (FDEs) with Caputo derivative. This method is constructed based on the residual function and the error equation deduced from Volterra integral equations equivalent to the FDEs. The proposed method allows that one can use a relatively few nodes to obtain the high accuracy numerical solutions of FDEs without the penalty of a huge computational cost due to the nonlocality of Caputo derivative. Finally, preliminary numerical experiments are given to verify the efficiency and accuracy of this method.

Impulsive multiorders fractional differential equations are studied. Existence and uniqueness results are obtained for first- and second-order impulsive initial value problems by using Banach’s fixed point theorem in an appropriate weighted space. Examples illustrating the main results are presented.

In this article, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of extremal solutions for nonlinear initial value problems of fractional differential equations involving the ψ -Caputo derivative. Moreover, some uniqueness results are obtained. Our results rely on the standard tools of functional analysis. More precisely we apply the monotone iterative technique combined with the method of upper and lower solutions to establish sufficient conditions for existence as well as the uniqueness of extremal solutions to the initial value problem. An illustrative example is presented to point out the applicability of our main results.

The aim of this paper is to establish the existence and uniqueness results for differential equations of Hilfer-type fractional order with variable coefficient. Firstly, we establish the equivalent Volterra integral equation to an initial value problem for a class of nonlinear fractional differential equations involving Hilfer fractional derivative. Secondly, we obtain the existence and uniqueness results for a class of Hilfer fractional differential equations with variable coefficient. We verify our results by providing two examples.

A coupled system of singular fractional differential equations involving Riemann–Liouville integral and Caputo derivative is considered in this paper. The question of existence and uniqueness of solutions is studied using Banach contraction principle. Furthermore, the question of existence of at least one solution is discussed. At the end, an illustrative example is given in details.
