We report here on an albino specimen of Schizolecis guntheri caught in the rio Bonito in the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that albinism is more common in fishes with cryptobiotic and/or nocturnal habits is strengthened by additional records of this chromatic anomaly.

Medium and large-sized terrestrial mammals develop important functions in ecosystems maintenance. However, this group is the most vulnerable to local extinctions, through habitat loss or hunting. This study inventoried the community of medium and large mammals in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú (REGUA), Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, providing data on species composition, richness and abundance. Species were registered through the use of camera traps, sign survey and visual encounters on pre-existing trails and roads. The study was conducted from January to October 2012, with each month considered as a sample unit. An effort of 1568 cameras-day and 120 km traveled, resulted on 302 records of 22 species of medium and large-sized mammals, belonging to eight orders. This value corresponds to more than three-quarters of the richness described from this group in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state. Five species are under some level of regional, national or global threat. Three game species, Pecari tajacu, Cuniculus paca and Dasyprocta leporina were abundant in the area. The observed richness was comparable to that found in other studies conducted in rain forests. Thus, for its high number of species, including those under some degree of threat, we conclude that REGUA is an important area to mammal conservation, especially in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state.

New data on the jumping-spider genus Arnoliseus are presented. Three new species from the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro state are described, based on both sexes: Arnoliseus cariocasp. nov. from the city of Rio de Janeiro, and Arnoliseus hastatussp. nov. and Arnoliseus falcatussp. nov. from the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu. The genus’ genital morphology is discussed in detail and new English terminology for their structures is created. An identification key for all Arnoliseus species is given.

Two new species of Neomarica (Trimezieae, Iridoideae, Iridaceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Southeast Brazil, are described and illustrated: Neomarica mauroi, endemic to the municipality of Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro State; and Neomarica sancti-vicentei, endemic to the municipality of São Vicente, São Paulo State.

Composition, diversity and density of benthic macroinvertebrates were described based on samples from the four different sites of Rio Mato Grosso, Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro. Biotic and environmental data were obtained in January 2006 in microhabitats with different substrates. A total of 5.605 specimens of the 28 insect families and two crustaceous families are sampled. The lowest values of richness, diversity, equitability and density were observed in low altitude sites. The highest diversity and density values were observed in litter substrate, while sand substrate showed lower values of these parameters. Estrutura da Comunidade de Macroinvertebrados Aquáticos de um Riacho de Mata Atlântica, Brasil Resumo. A composição, diversidade e densidade de macroinvertebrados bentônicos foram descritas a partir de amostras provenientes de quatro localidades distintas do Rio Mato Grosso, Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro. Os dados bióticos e abióticos foram obtidos em janeiro 2006 em microhabitats com diferentes tipos de substrato. Foi amostrado um total de 5.605 espécimes de 28 famílias de insetos e duas de crustáceos. Os menores valores de riqueza, diversidade, equitabilidade e densidade foram registrados nas localidades de menor altitude. Folhiço foi o substrato com maiores valores de diversidade e densidade, enquanto areia apresentou os menores valores desses parâmetros.

Phytoseiid mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae) have been largely used for the biological control of arthropod pests. However, information on the phytoseiid fauna associated with plants of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil is still scanty. Surveys were carried out in two areas of Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State – Jaguanum island and Paraty. We report 11 species of seven genera from all three subfamilies. A complementary re-description is provided for Amblyseius impeltatus Denmark & Muma, 1973 and measurements are provided for ten other species.

Alouatta guariba clamitans Cabrera, 1940 is an endemic species of the Atlantic Forest that occurs from south Bahia, Brazil, extending south to the province of Misiones, Argentina. In Rio de Janeiro state, the species was classified as threatened, indicating that attention is needed for the conservation of this taxon. Additionally, an outbreak of yellow fever spread throughout the southeastern states of Brazil from January 2017 until March 2018 seriously threatening Rio de Janeiro populations of the species. Herein, we aimed to provide the first estimates of A. g. clamitans encounter rate, density, and population size in the Ilha Grande State Park (PEIG), which is part of the Atlantic Forest biome of Brazil. Data were collected in two different periods, the first between December 2003 and May 2005, and the second from August 2009 to May 2010, and information on encounter rates and behavior was collected to better understand aspects of species' ecology. The estimated encounter rate in the first period through the distance sampling method was 0.04 ± 0.01 individuals per kilometer. Nine groups were recorded in the second period of the study, with 47 individuals along 3 km. Our estimates of encounter rate, density and population size were low and reinforces the need to initiate species monitoring and assess the impact that yellow fever outbreaks may have on PEIG populations. The results presented here can be a starting point to support future strategic actions for the species, to measure impacts and to the management of the species, and for a conservation program.
