ABSTRACT Physician reentry to clinical practice is fast becoming recognized as an issue of central importance in discussions about the physician workforce. While there are few empirical studies, existing data show that increasing numbers of physicians take a leave of absence from practice at some point during their careers; this trend is expected to continue. The process of returning to clinical practice is coming under scrutiny due to the public's increasing demand for transparency regarding physician competence. Criteria for medical licensure often do not include an expectation of ongoing clinical activity. Physicians who maintain a license but do not practice for a period of time, therefore, may be reentering the workforce with unknown competency to practice. This paper: (1) presents survey data on current physician reentry policies of state medical boards; (2) discusses the findings from the survey within the context of regulatory challenges that impact physician-reentry; and (3) offers recommendations to facilitate the development of comprehensive, coordinated regulatory policies on physician reentry.

The goal of the Mid-career Professional Group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is to support the development and mentoring of mid-career professionals. One opportunity for which early mid-career professionals lack knowledge is the sabbatical. Following a designated number of years of consecutive service, a sabbatical can provide a time for personal and professional development through an approved leave of absence. While sabbaticals provide time for deep consideration of a particular topic and/or to reconsider one’s career options, few mid-career professionals are prepared to plan and to execute a sabbatical period. This panel will introduce the benefits of a sabbatical and will highlight options and strategies for those who are considering the sabbatical opportunity.

After two short seasons spent in investigating the high terrace of the lower Thames, it was considered desirable to examine the gravel of a tributary, in order to equate if possible the various deposits in the two valleys, and to confirm or correct the sequence deduced from former excavatións at home and abroad. Two sites near Rickmansworth, at and just below the junction of the Gade and Colne rivers, have been known for years as productive of palaeoliths, and every facility was readily afforded for examining the gravel in pits at Croxley Green and Mill End by the respective owners, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and Lord Rendlesham, and the lessees, the RickmansworthGravel Co., Ltd., and Messrs. Horwood Bros. Leave of absence was granted by the Trustees of the British Museum, and nine days were devoted to the work in October, the means being provided from a fund under the control of our Vice-President, Sir Hercules Read, Keeper of the Department concerned. Assistance from the geological side was given unofficially by Mr. Dewey, of H.M. Geological Survey, who has read through the paper in manuscript, and contributes an appendix dealing with some of the geological problems involved.

It must have been in Hamburg during the winter of 1920–21 that I heard Busoni for the first time, as soloist in a concert directed by Werner Wolff-the son of the impresario Hermann Wolff, a former secretary of Hans von Bülow, who had also been at one time Busoni's manager. Werner Wolff, a fine musician and a conductor of the Hamburg Opera, was my teacher in harmony and counterpoint, and had invited me to be present during his rehearsals with the Hamburg Philharmonic. I was still at school - in my final year - and had to have special leave of absence for two days, something that was very rarely granted. But such was the reputation of Busoni as a world-famous virtuoso that the headmaster readily agreed.
