AbstractWe describe an algorithm for computing a $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ Q -rational model for the quotient of a modular curve by an automorphism group, under mild assumptions on the curve and the automorphisms, by determining q-expansions for a basis of the corresponding space of cusp forms. We also give a moduli interpretation for general morphisms between modular curves.

We study the automorphisms of the nonsplit Cartan modular curves $X_{\text{ns}}(p)$ of prime level $p$. We prove that if $p\geqslant 29$ all the automorphisms preserve the cusps. Furthermore, if $p\equiv 1~\text{mod}~12$ and $p\neq 13$, the automorphism group is generated by the modular involution given by the normalizer of a nonsplit Cartan subgroup of $\text{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$. We also prove that for every $p\geqslant 29$ the existence of an exceptional rational automorphism would give rise to an exceptional rational point on the modular curve $X_{\text{ns}}^{+}(p)$ associated to the normalizer of a nonsplit Cartan subgroup of $\text{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$.

It is well known that newforms of integral weight are simultaneous eigenforms for all the Hecke operators, and that the converse is not true. In this paper, we give a characterization of all simultaneous Hecke eigenforms associated to a given newform, and provide several applications. These include determining the number of linearly independent simultaneous eigenforms in a fixed space which correspond to a given newform, and characterizing several situations in which the full space of cusp forms is spanned by a basis consisting of such eigenforms. Part of our results can be seen as a generalization of results of Choie–Kohnen who considered diagonalization of "bad" Hecke operators on spaces with square-free level and trivial character. Of independent interest, but used herein, is a lower bound for the dimension of the space of newforms with arbitrary character.

AbstractIn this paper we compute and continue meromorphically to the whole complex plane the zeta function for twisted modular curves. The twist of the modular curve is done by a modprepresentation of the absolute Galois group.

The purpose of this paper is to study the dimension formula for cusp forms of weight one, following the series of Hiramatsu [2] and Hiramatsu-Akiyama [3]. We define as usual the subgroup Γ0(N) of SL2(Z) by.

This chapter discusses several aspects of the practical side of computing with modular forms and Galois representations. It starts by discussing computations with modular forms, and from there work towards the computation of polynomials that give the Galois representations associated with modular forms. Throughout, the chapter denotes the space of cusp forms of weight k, group Γ‎₁(N), and character ε‎ by Sₖ(N, ε‎).

Abstract We consider the generalized Jacobian {\widetilde{J}} of the modular curve {X_{0}(N)} of level N with respect to a reduced divisor consisting of all cusps. Supposing N is square free, we explicitly determine the structure of the {\mathbb{Q}} -rational torsion points on {\widetilde{J}} up to 6-primary torsion. The result depicts a fuller picture than [18] where the case of prime power level was studied. We also obtain an analogous result for Drinfeld modular curves. Our proof relies on similar results for classical Jacobians due to Ohta, Papikian and the first author. We also discuss the Hecke action on {\widetilde{J}} and its Eisenstein property.

We prove a bound for the Fourier coefficients of a cusp form of integral weight which is not a newform by computing an explicit orthogonal basis for the space of cusp forms of given integral weight and level.

AbstractLet Sw+2(Γ0(N)) be the vector space of cusp forms of weight w + 2 on the congruence subgroup Γ0(N). We first determine explicit formulas for period polynomials of elements in Sw+2(Γ0(N)) by means of Bernoulli polynomials. When N = 2, from these explicit formulas we obtain new bases for Sw+2(Γ0(2)), and extend the Eichler–Shimura–Manin isomorphism theorem to Γ0(2). This implies that there are natural correspondences between the spaces of cusp forms on Γ0(2) and the spaces of period polynomials. Based on these results, we will find explicit form of Hecke operators on Sw+2(Γ0(2)). As an application of main theorems, we will also give an affirmative answer to a speculation of Imamoglu and Kohnen on a basis of Sw+2(Γ0(2)).

For a prime q ≡ 3 ( mod 4) and the character [Formula: see text], we consider the subspace of the space of holomorphic cusp forms of weight one, level q and character χ that is spanned by forms that correspond to Galois representations of octahedral type. We prove that this subspace has dimension bounded by [Formula: see text] upto multiplication by a constant that depends only on ε.
