AbstractWe describe a method to compute mod $$\ell $$ ℓ Galois representations contained in the $${{\text {H}}}_{\acute{\mathrm{e}}\mathrm{t}}^2$$ H e ´ t 2 of surfaces. We apply this method to the case of a representation with values in $${\text {GL}}_3(\mathbb {F}_9)$$ GL 3 ( F 9 ) attached to an eigenform over a congruence subgroup of $${\text {SL}}_3$$ SL 3 . We obtain, in particular, a polynomial with Galois group isomorphic to the simple group $${\text {PSU}}_3(\mathbb {F}_9)$$ PSU 3 ( F 9 ) and ramified at 2 and 3 only.

<p>Let SL$ _n(\mathbb{Q}) $ be the set of matrices of order $ n $ over the rational numbers with determinant equal to 1. We study in this paper a subset $ \Lambda $ of SL$ _n(\mathbb{Q}) $, where a matrix $ B $ belongs to $ \Lambda $ if and only if the conjugate subgroup $ B\Gamma_q(n)B^{-1} $ of principal congruence subgroup $ \Gamma_q(n) $ of lever $ q $ is contained in modular group SL$ _n(\mathbb{Z}) $. The notion of least common denominator (LCD for convenience) of a rational matrix plays a key role in determining whether B belongs to $ \Lambda $. We show that LCD can be described by the prime decomposition of $ q $. Generally $ \Lambda $ is not a group, and not even a subsemigroup of SL$ _n(\mathbb{Q}) $. Nevertheless, for the case $ n = 2 $, we present two families of subgroups that are maximal in $ \Lambda $ in this paper.</p>

Abstract We test the refined distance conjecture in the vector multiplet moduli space of 4D $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 compactifications of the type IIA string that admit a dual heterotic description. In the weakly coupled regime of the heterotic string, the moduli space geometry is governed by the perturbative heterotic dualities, which allows for exact computations. This is reflected in the type IIA frame through the existence of a K3 fibration. We identify the degree d = 2N of the K3 fiber as a parameter that could potentially lead to large distances, which is substantiated by studying several explicit models. The moduli space geometry degenerates into the modular curve for the congruence subgroup Γ0(N)+. In order to probe the large N regime, we initiate the study of Calabi-Yau threefolds fibered by general degree d > 8 K3 surfaces by suggesting a construction as complete intersections in Grassmann bundles.

Abstract We propose to construct the finite modular groups from the quotient of two principal congruence subgroups as Γ(N′)/Γ(N″), and the modular group SL(2, ℤ) is ex- tended to a principal congruence subgroup Γ(N′). The original modular invariant theory is reproduced when N′ = 1. We perform a comprehensive study of $$ {\Gamma}_6^{\prime } $$ Γ 6 ′ modular symmetry corresponding to N′ = 1 and N″ = 6, five types of models for lepton masses and mixing with $$ {\Gamma}_6^{\prime } $$ Γ 6 ′ modular symmetry are discussed and some example models are studied numerically. The case of N′ = 2 and N″ = 6 is considered, the finite modular group is Γ(2)/Γ(6) ≅ T′, and a benchmark model is constructed.

We study several classes of holomorphic dynamical systems associated with quadrature domains. Our main result is that real-symmetric polynomials in the principal hyperbolic component of the Mandelbrot set can be conformally mated with a congruence subgroup of P S L ( 2 , Z ) \mathrm {PSL}(2,\mathbb {Z}) , and that this conformal mating is the Schwarz function of a simply connected quadrature domain.

AbstractLet C be a complex algebraic curve uniformized by a Fuchsian group Γ. In the first part of this paper we identify the automorphism group of the solenoid associated with Γ with the Belyaev completion of its commensurator {\mathrm{Comm}(\Gamma)} and we use this identification to show that the isomorphism class of this completion is an invariant of the natural Galois action of {\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Q})} on algebraic curves. In turn, this fact yields a proof of the Galois invariance of the arithmeticity of Γ independent of Kazhhdan’s. In the second part we focus on the case in which Γ is arithmetic. The list of further Galois invariants we find includes: (i) the periods of {\mathrm{Comm}(\Gamma)}, (ii) the solvability of the equations {X^{2}+\sin^{2}\frac{2\pi}{2k+1}} in the invariant quaternion algebra of Γ and (iii) the property of Γ being a congruence subgroup.

Based on the general strategy described by Borel and Serre and the Voronoi algorithm for computing unit groups of orders we present an algorithm for finding presentations of [Formula: see text]-unit groups of orders. The algorithm is then used for some investigations concerning the congruence subgroup property.

AbstractThe class of multi-EGS groups is a generalisation of the well-known Grigorchuk–Gupta–Sidki (GGS-)groups. Here we classify branch multi-EGS groups with the congruence subgroup property and determine the profinite completion of all branch multi-EGS groups. Additionally, our results show that branch multi-EGS groups are just infinite.

Abstract We study the modular symmetry of zero-modes on $$ {T}_1^2\times {T}_2^2 $$ T 1 2 × T 2 2 and orbifold compactifications with magnetic fluxes, M1, M2, where modulus parameters are identified. This identification breaks the modular symmetry of $$ {T}_1^2\times {T}_2^2 $$ T 1 2 × T 2 2 , SL(2, ℤ)1× SL(2, ℤ)2 to SL(2, ℤ) ≡ Γ. Each of the wavefunctions on $$ {T}_1^2\times {T}_2^2 $$ T 1 2 × T 2 2 and orbifolds behaves as the modular forms of weight 1 for the principal congruence subgroup Γ(N), N being 2 times the least common multiple of M1 and M2. Then, zero-modes transform each other under the modular symmetry as multiplets of double covering groups of ΓN such as the double cover of S4.
