The efficiencies of different clean-up procedures for crude corn extract from corn samples naturally contaminated by fumonisins B1 and B2 were compared. These procedures precede liquid chromatography determination with fluorescence detection. The efficiencies of immunoaffinity columns (IMA) strong anion exchange columns (SAX), as well as columns with reversed-phase C18 (RP C18) were investigated. No significant differences in the obtained results were found, regardless of the crude extract clea-nup procedure. However, the use of IMA columns for clean-up provided better chromatographic resolution, with the clean-up procedure being the simplest and the fastest. Also, because of the possibility of IMA column regeneration, it is possible to prepare ten samples on one column, so all in all, the lower price of SAX and RP C18 columns is of no great significance.

Wood processing operations, in particular debarking, can pose a significant hazard for the chainsaw operator when performed without due caution. The most common hazards with potentially fatal consequences include kickback which occurs when the chainsaw’s guide bar is violently thrown backwards towards the operator. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of wood species and different saw chain brands on the kickback angle of a chainsaw. The kickback angle of a combustion chainsaw was analyzed in a self-designed test stand with the use of a digital level gauge accurate to 0.1°. Four differently priced saw chain brands, including two standard chains and two chains with anti-kickback features, were evaluated. Kickback was analyzed on five wood species (pine, spruce, birch, alder and oak) at three engine speeds (50%, 75% and 100% of maximum rotational speed). Kickback was significantly determined by wood species and saw chain type, and it was less influenced by the rotational speed of the chainsaw engine. The average kickback angle was largest in alder and smallest in spruce. The analyzed parameter was not always reduced by saw chains with anti-kickback features. In some cases, low-priced saw chains with anti-kickback features offer less protection than more expensive standard chains. Chainsaw buyers should decide whether it is worthwhile to compromise on safety in exchange for a lower price.

Abstract Quite a few economists hold the opinion that exorbitant prices paid for original works of art reflect an irrational cult made of unique pieces created by renowned artists; (close to) perfect copies would yield comparable benefits at a substantially lower price. The article gives reasons for the rationality of this seemingly irrational behavior and, among other things, explains the price difference between originals and their copies on a microeconomic basis.

This chapter shows the revolution that is happening in the financial system, having as main actor the technological companies—the fintechs—that don't have financial knowhow. The traditional banks didn't structure their business trying to attend the client's needs. The clients always suited themselves to banks' services. The fintechs are changing this reality by putting the client in another baseline, filling the gaps left by the banks, offering new services, and acting in places where banks have never gone before. The fintechs are offering these services with a lower price and more quality for the clients.

The chapter explores shared accommodation platforms such as Airbnb and the primary motivations for its customers. This research will be based on the deductive process, which is focused on primary and secondary research. This research aims to analyze the motivation towards either the Airbnb platform or traditional hotel from different perspectives, such as economic, environmental, and social. Additionally, after secondary data research, the questionnaire has been constructed to understand the main concepts of the P2P platform and its customers' needs. The investigation tried to notice what are the motivations which drive individuals to use P2P accommodation service. Through the survey, it was possible to see the motivations mainly related to the economic factor and environmental. Primarily due to the lower price of Airbnb, there is a more significant intent to book through this specific platform.

This case concerns the promotional activities of Nashua Photo, the nation's largest mail-order photofinishing firm. Discount-price mailers (inserted in local newspapers, for example) were used to generate new customers, but also allowed existing customers to pay a lower price. Students must evaluate not only the results of last quarter's 125 separate promotions in light of this “leakage,” but also the appropriateness of discount-price mailers within Nashua's marketing mix.

Product return is a common after-sale service. Existing literature has assumed loss neutral consumers, while in practice consumers are often more sensitive to utility losses than gains, i.e., customers are often loss averse. In this paper, we study the impact of such loss aversion on the retailer's optimal pricing and returns policies. We analyze three scenarios where the seller offers no refund, full refund and partial refund for the returned products. Under each scenario, the seller determines the optimal price, quantity, and refund amount (under partial refund case) in order to maximize the expected profit. Our results demonstrate that consumer loss aversion leads a no-refund retailer to charge lower price and order smaller quantity, has no impact on a full-refund retailer, and results in a more lenient returns policy for a partial-refund retailer. We also find contracts that coordinate supply chains selling to loss averse consumers. Therefore, this article sheds some lights on how the management of returns policies should be adapted when consumers are loss averse.
