: This review covers the use of lanthanide nanomaterials for development of electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Lanthanides, as f-block-based elements, possess remarkable chemical and physical properties in recent years. In ECL, electrochemically generated intermediates undergo highly exergonic reactions, producing electronically excited states that emit light. These electron-transfer reactions are sufficiently exergonic to enable the generation of excited states of luminophores without photoexcitation. We introduce the main types of lanthanides nanomaterials, and their physical, chemical and biological properties along with applications in different ECL sensors with respect to the corresponding functions they serve.
