We investigate some new properties of mean inactivity time (MIT) order and increasing MIT (IMIT) class of life distributions. The preservation property of MIT order under increasing and concave transformations, reversed preservation properties of MIT order, and IMIT class of life distributions under the taking of maximum are developed. Based on the residual life at a random time and the excess lifetime in a renewal process, stochastic comparisons of both IMIT and decreasing mean residual life distributions are conducted as well.

In this paper, we investigatek-out-of-nsystems with independent and identically distributed components. Some characterizations of the IFR(2), DMRL, NBU(2) and NBUC classes of life distributions are obtained in terms of the monotonicity of the residual life given that the (n-k)th failure has occurred at timet≥ 0. These results complement those reported by Belzunce, Franco and Ruiz (1999). Similar conclusions based on the residual life of a parallel system conditioned by the (n-k)th failure time are presented as well.

The concept of mean residual life plays an important role in reliability and life testing. In this paper, we introduce and study a new stochastic order called proportional mean residual life order. Several characterizations and preservation properties of the new order under some reliability operations are discussed. As a consequence, a new class of life distributions is introduced on the basis of the anti-star-shaped property of the mean residual life function. We study some reliability properties and some characterizations of this class and provide some examples of interest in reliability.
