On a national level over 5% of the population isestimated to be infected with the hepatitis C virus(HCV), which corresponds to a prevalentpopulation of >70 million people with chronicinfection. For many patients who becomechronically infected, HCV causes slow,progressive damage to the liver and represents oneof the leading causes of cirrhosis andhepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
