A novel time delayed chaotic oscillator exhibiting mono- and double scroll complex chaotic attractors is designed. This circuit consists of only a few operational amplifiers and diodes and employs a threshold controller for flexibility. It efficiently implements a piecewise linear function. The control of piecewise linear function facilitates controlling the shape of the attractors. This is demonstrated by constructing the phase portraits of the attractors through numerical simulations and hardware experiments. Based on these studies, we find that this circuit can produce multi-scroll chaotic attractors by just introducing more number of threshold values.

Abstract In this paper, an experimental forced response analysis for a two degree of freedom piecewise-linear oscillator is discussed. First, a mathematical model of the piecewise linear oscillator is presented. Second, the experimental setup developed for the forced response study is presented. The experimental setup is capable of investigating a two degree of freedom piecewise linear oscillator model. The piecewise linearity is achieved by attaching mechanical stops between two masses that move along common shafts. Forced response tests have been conducted, and the results are presented. Discussion of characteristics of the oscillators are provided based on frequency response, spectrogram, time histories, phase portraits, and Poincaré sections. Period doubling bifurcation has been observed when the excitation frequency changes from a frequency with multiple contacts between the masses to a frequency with single contact between the masses occurs.

AbstractIn this article we determine the global geometry of the planar quadratic differential systems with a weak focus of third order. This class plays a significant role in the context of Hilbert's 16-th problem. Indeed, all examples of quadratic differential systems with at least four limit cycles, were obtained by perturbing a system in this family. We use the algebro-geometric concepts of divisor and zero-cycle to encode global properties of the systems and to give structure to this class. We give a theorem of topological classification of such systems in terms of integer-valued affine invariants. According to the possible values taken by them in this family we obtain a total of 18 topologically distinct phase portraits. We show that inside the class of all quadratic systems with the topology of the coefficients, there exists a neighborhood of the family of quadratic systems with a weak focus of third order and which may have graphics but no polycycle in the sense of [15] and no limit cycle, such that any quadratic system in this neighborhood has at most four limit cycles.

We study a class of discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by the straight line x = 0. In x > 0, we have a linear saddle with its equilibrium point living in x > 0, and in x < 0 we have a linear differential center. Let p be the equilibrium point of this linear center, when p lives in x < 0, we say that it is real, and when p lives in x > 0 we say that it is virtual. We assume that this discontinuous piecewise linear differential system formed by the center and the saddle has a center q surrounded by periodic orbits ending in a homoclinic orbit of the saddle, independent if p is real, virtual or p is in x = 0. Note that q = p if p is real or p is in x = 0. We perturb these three classes of systems, according to the position of p, inside the class of all discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by x = 0. Let N be the maximum number of limit cycles which can bifurcate from the periodic solutions of the center q with these perturbations. Our main results show that N = 2 when p is on x = 0, and N ≥ 2 when p is a real or virtual center. Furthermore, when p is a real center we found an example satisfying N ≥ 3.

We study the number of limit cycles of the discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems in ℝ2n with two zones separated by a hyperplane. Our main result shows that at most (8n - 6)n-1 limit cycles can bifurcate up to first-order expansion of the displacement function with respect to a small parameter. For proving this result, we use the averaging theory in a form where the differentiability of the system is not necessary.
