A novel non-precious-metal electrocatalyst for ORR is prepared by the pyrolysis of copolymer networks (CPN) in the presence of iron(ii) acetate. The as-prepared Fe–NTP/C-900 exhibits excellent ORR activity in both alkaline and acidic media.
