Background: Understanding trend in nutritional status is crucial to inform national health priorities to improve diets and reduce related diseases. The present study aimed to analyze trends in the concentrations of all measured nutritional biomarkers and their status among US adults across 14 years.Methods: Trends on the concentrations of nutritional biomarkers and nutritional status evaluated by the prevalence of deficiency, inadequacy, excess, and dyslipidemia were analyzed among US adults in 7 cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES 2003–2016) and by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.Results: A total of 38,505 participants (weighted mean age of 47.2 years, 51.4% women) were included in the present study. Across 14 years, increased trends were found in red blood cell (RBC) folate, serum vitamin B12, vitamin D and albumin, the prevalence of iodine deficiency, vitamin B6 inadequacy, and hypophosphatemia, whereas decreased trends were observed in serum vitamin E, phosphorus, total calcium, total protein, apolipoprotein B (Apo B), low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), blood lead, cadmium, mercury, and the prevalence of vitamin C deficiency, vitamin D inadequacy, iodine excess, and dyslipidemia with elevated LDL-C, TC, TG, and lowered HDL/LDL. Non-Hispanic blacks (NHB) and participants with low socioeconomic status were accounted for the poor nutritional status of most biomarkers compared to their comparts.Conclusion: Most nutritional biomarkers and their status were improved among US adults from 2003 to 2016, but some specific populations should be paid much attention to improve their nutritional status, especially for NHB and participants with low socioeconomic status.

E. coli is the best-studied prokaryote, and some strains of this bacterium are human pathogens. We show that when the level of the enzyme that catalyzes the penultimate step of vitamin B 12 biosynthesis is elevated, the viability of E. coli decreases.

AbstractThis work explores the use of ultrasound (US) as a means of intensifying the impregnation of apple cubes with vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). The effect of different US power densities (90 and 200 WL−1) and treatment times (5, 10, and 15 min) was evaluated, on vitamin load, vitamin stability, and physicochemical and microstructural properties of the fruit matrix. The US enhanced the impregnation producing high cyanocobalamin content products (0.12–0.19 mg vitamin/g db.). Vitamin losses in the sonication medium due to US application were not significant. Impregnated samples exhibited higher moisture and lower soluble solids with respect to the untreated fruit. Changes in chromatic coordinates were well correlated to vitamin uptake. Only at the highest treatment intensities (200 WL−1, 10, and 15 min) was a marked softening observed, which agreed with the microstructural changes observed in fruit tissues. Results permit US-assisted impregnation to be considered a promising technology in the preparation of vitamin B12 fortified apple cubes.

Coastal marine phototrophs exhibit some of the highest rates of primary productivity in the world. They have been found to host a diverse set of microbes, many of which may impact the biology of their phototroph hosts through metabolisms that are unique to microbial taxa. Here we characterized the metabolic functions of phototroph-associated microbial communities using metagenomes collected from 2 species of kelp (Laminaria setchellii and Nereocystis luetkeana) and 3 marine angiosperms (Phyllospadix scouleri, P. serrulatus and Zostera marina), including the rhizomes of two surfgrass species (Phyllospadix spp.) and the seagrass Zostera marina, and the sediments surrounding P. scouleri and Z. marina. Using metagenomic sequencing, we describe 72 metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) that potentially benefit from being associated with macrophytes and may contribute to macrophyte fitness through their metabolic gene content. All host-associated metagenomes contained genes for the use of dissolved organic matter from hosts and vitamin (B1, B2, B7, B12) biosynthesis. Additionally, we found a range of nitrogen metabolism genes that transform dissolved inorganic nitrogen into forms that may be more available to the host. The rhizosphere of surfgrass and seagrass contained genes for anaerobic microbial metabolisms, including nifH genes associated with nitrogen fixation, despite residing in a well-mixed and oxygenated environment. The range of oxygen environments engineered by macrophytes likely explains the diversity of both oxidizing and reducing microbial metabolisms, and contributes to the functional capabilities of microbes and their influence on carbon and nitrogen cycling in nearshore ecosystems.

The pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-binding protein (PLPBP) plays an important role in vitamin B 6 homeostasis. Loss of this protein in organisms such as Escherichia coli and humans disrupts the vitamin B 6 pool and induces intracellular accumulation of pyridoxine 5'-phosphate (PNP), which is normally undetectable in wild-type cells. The accumulated PNP could affect diverse metabolic systems through inhibition of some PLP-dependent enzymes. In this study, we investigated the as yet unclear mechanism of intracellular accumulation of PNP by the loss of PLPBP protein encoded by yggS in E. coli . Genetic studies using several PLPBP-deficient strains of E. coli lacking known enzyme(s) in the de novo or salvage pathway of vitamin B 6 , which includes pyridoxine (amine) 5'-phosphate oxidase (PNPO), PNP synthase, pyridoxal kinase, and pyridoxal reductase, demonstrated that neither the flux from the de novo pathway nor the salvage pathway solely contributed to the PNP accumulation caused by the PLPBP mutation. Studies with the strains lacking both PLPBP and PNPO suggested that PNP shares the same pool with PMP, and showed that PNP levels are impacted by PMP levels and vice versa . We show that disruption of PLPBP lead to perturb PMP homeostasis, which may result in PNP accumulation in the PLPBP-deficient strains. Importance A PLP-binding protein PLPBP from the conserved COG0325 family has recently been recognized as a key player in vitamin B 6 homeostasis in various organisms. Loss of PLPBP disrupts vitamin B 6 homeostasis and perturbs diverse metabolisms, including amino acid and α-keto acid metabolism. Accumulation of PNP is a characteristic phenotype of the PLPBP deficiency and is suggested to be a potential cause of the pleiotropic effects, but the mechanism of the PNP accumulation was poorly understood. In this study, we show that fluxes for PNP synthesis/metabolism are not responsible for the accumulation of PNP. Our results indicate that PLPBP is involved in the homeostasis of pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate, and its disruption may lead to the accumulation of PNP in PLPBP-deficiency.

Vitamins are a heterogeneous group of organic compounds that help ensure the human bodys wellbeing and function. This paper introduces the importance of all vitamins, both water-soluble and fat-soluble, as well as problems deriving from their deficiency. Additionally, vitamin supplements as part of treating vitamin deficiency, and possible harmful effects on the human body areshowcased. The main focus of the paper is on the vitamin B complex, and vitamin B12 specifically. The benefits of vitamin B12, as well as its action in the human body and the noxious effects of any lack of vitamin B12 in the human body, are also discussed. Some of the health conditionsan individual may need to face when they have vitamin B12 deficiency include neural tube defects, Alzheimers disease, depression, and megaloblastic anaemia, which are also introduced and further discussed, in terms of symptomatology, causes and suggested treatment. The toxicity of vitamin B12 is also introduced, and possible causes for vitamin B12 deficiency are showcased.

Banyaknya industri di Kota Cilegon yang tetap beroperasi saat pandemi corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) membuat pekerja industri harus tetap pergi bekerja sehingga berpotensi tertular. Usaha pencegahan infeksi COVID-19 dilakukan dengan penerapan protokol kesehatan dan peningkatan sistem imun. Peningkatan penjualan vitamin B, C, D, dan E hingga tiga kali lipat selama pandemi menandakan bahwa masyarakat berusaha berperilaku untuk meningkatkan sistem imun. Pengetahuan merupakan tahap awal seseorang dalam menerima stimulus baru yang akan menentukan sikap dan tindakan dalam berperilaku. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui profil pengetahuan tentang vitamin sebagai peningkat sistem imun untuk pencegahan COVID-19 pada pekerja industri di Kota Cilegon. Desain penelitian merupakan observasional secara cross sectional dengan teknik accidental sampling dan snowball sampling. Penelitian ini mendapatkan keterangan layak etik dari Komisi Etik Fakultas Farmasi Universitas Airlangga. Penelitian dilakukan pada 100 responden pekerja industri pada bulan Mei sampai Juni 2021 di Kota Cilegon. Responden diberikan instrumen kuesioner secara daring (online) dengan Google Form. Instrumen kuesioner terdiri tiga indikator yaitu pengetahuan tentang COVID-19, pengetahuan tentang sistem imun, dan pengetahuan tentang vitamin sebagai peningkat sistem imun untuk pencegahan COVID-19. Analisis data dilakukan dengan Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) versi 25. Analisis data menunjukkan 1% responden memiliki pengetahuan rendah, 32% responden berpengetahuan sedang, dan 67% responden berpengetahuan tinggi. Pengetahuan pekerja industri di Kota Cilegon tentang vitamin sebagai peningkat sistem imun untuk pencegahan COVID-19 menunjukkan hasil pengetahuan tinggi.
